UAE's recent amendment in the law allows surrogacy for childbirth
The recent modification in UAE law now permits individuals to choose surrogacy for childbirth, an option previously unavailable in the country. The law broadens the scope of medically assisted reproduction techniques (such as IVF) to non-Muslim individuals without requiring a marriage certificate. It also sanctions surrogacy and grants unmarried couples access to fertilization and implantation procedures.
UAE to set up specialised court to manage bankruptcy cases
Specialised courts dedicated to managing bankruptcy cases are set to be established in the UAE, as part of the government's efforts to revamp the legal framework surrounding restructuring and insolvency. This aims to simplify the process and bolster investor confidence. The federal law concerning financial restructuring and bankruptcy was officially released in the UAE Gazette on October 31, slated to be enforced starting from May 1, 2024.
New insurance law mandates a minimum AED 50,000 claim to appeal against the decision
The new insurance laws in the United Arab Emirates have replaced the Insurance Settlement Dispute Committee (IDC) with the Banking and Insurance Dispute Resolution Unit (Bidru). The new insurance law came into effect on November 30, 2023. As per the law, if a claim's value is below AED 50,000, insurers are unable to contest Bidru's decision. However, if the claim surpasses AED 50,000, insurers have a window of 30 days from the decision's issuance or notification date to appeal the unit's decision at the Court of Appeal.
