This Week's Review: Redactable

A scalable redaction solution for lawyers who like to play it safe

In the legal world, where confidentiality reigns supreme, any slip in redaction can quickly turn into a courtroom faux pas. Redactable promises to save the day (and the file), offering a secure and straightforward way to safeguard sensitive information. Redactable is a cutting-edge redaction software that leverages artificial intelligence to streamline the document redaction process, making it particularly valuable for legal professionals. Could this tool be the unsung hero of your firm's tech arsenal? Let’s take a closer look.

Favorite law firm use cases: Redaction of digital documents for due diligence document reviews, client data redaction for public filings, or secure sharing of discovery materials. It’s especially useful for firms managing large volumes of documents requiring airtight confidentiality.

Features & Functionality

Redactable operates on a simple yet sophisticated premise: redact smarter, not harder. Its user-friendly platform allows lawyers to easily upload documents, automatically detect sensitive information, and remove it with just a few clicks. I found a need for it myself when producing this newsletter. Redaction, let's be honest, is a tedious chore (for you or a paralegal), and ?I wanted to find a simple tool that employs AI to save me time.

Redactable is designed specifically for efficient and secure redaction of documents, distinguishing itself from traditional tools like Adobe by focusing solely on this function. It promises to complete redactions up to 98% faster than other solutions, which is crucial for law practices as time is money. I thought it was worth trying out.

After an easy account setup process, Redactable treats you to a simple user interface. I won't take up the real estate here to show you, but once logged in, Redactable takes you through a very thorough step by step explanation of features that is perfect for individuals who tend to be technology challenged (...anyone you know?).

The Dashboard

Redactable's standout feature is its AI Redaction Wizard, which automatically identifies sensitive data within documents. This significantly reduces the risk of human error associated with manual redaction and enhances accuracy, reportedly achieving over 90% accuracy in detecting sensitive information. And that is just with the default settings. The wizard allows users to customize detection rules, making it adaptable to various legal contexts. So how does this AI magic work? First upload your desired document. In my case I wanted to redact a how to guide I have created for law firms to run better realization reports. I created it with a previously reviewed product, Scribe.

Upload a document

Once uploaded, I clicked on the easy to find Redaction Wizard link where you are presented with 4 options. The Manual redaction is just like it sounds. Manual and unsophisticated. The the other features are where you can see the AI in action.

The Redaction Wizard

Each feature relies on AI-driven text recognition that ensures no stray confidential detail is left behind, even in dense legal briefs or contracts.

Text

I first used the Text redaction feature and entered names of the law firm and attorneys I first built this report for to test accuracy. It performed remarkably well, relying on standard OCR technology. It performed very well in finding the data, and than applying an opaque redaction to the names.

Categories

The Categories function was also extremely useful. After redacting names, I was able to choose other categories of possibly sensitive information, from a client's date of birth to the logo of the company or company names. The AI, again, performed remarkably well. It was like having a hawk-eyed paralegal scanning every page at lightning speed.

Auto

Finally, I tried out the Auto redaction feature. Using this feature, the system auto generates a list of items that Redactable perceives as sensitive and subject to redaction. It looks for everything from names to number sequences and generates a list on the right hand side where you can select and deselect items to be redacted. This is where the AI truly has a chance to shine. What’s more, the tool doesn’t just stop at text. Redactable can target images, embedded files, and metadata. This all-encompassing approach ensures no redaction stone is left unturned.

Beyond what the Redaction Wizard can do, one of the critical value add features of Redactable is its ability to permanently remove sensitive information, including hidden metadata. This ensures that once data is redacted, it cannot be recovered, thus maintaining compliance with stringent data protection regulations

Redactable supports teamwork through features that allow multiple users to collaborate on redaction projects simultaneously. Team members can comment on documents and manage access controls, ensuring effective communication and streamlined workflows. This is extremely helpful if you have a team of support staff working on a case file.

Additionally, the platform generates comprehensive audit trails and redaction certificates, which are essential for maintaining transparency and accountability in legal processes. These features help firms comply with legal standards while safeguarding client confidentiality.

Pricing & Plans

Redactable adopts a subscription-based pricing model tailored to the number of documents a customer needs to redact per month. You can subscribe for as little as $19/mo for the ability to redact up to 20 documents. You can also customize your plan based on your anticipated needs. You can use their pricing tool to customize your pricing. If you have a need to redact 150 documents or more per month, the pricing per document drops further ($99/mo). And you can even reach out about custom enterprise pricing if your practice has a heavy need for redaction.

What Makes It A.I. Enabled?

Redactable utilizes advanced AI for natural language processing and optical character recognition (OCR). This ensures it catches nuances in language that manual reviews or standard software might overlook. Advanced algorithms identify and highlight potential redaction fields within documents, which can be customized further with detection rules. Its machine learning models continuously refine accuracy, meaning the more you use it, the better it gets at understanding your firm's redaction patterns.

Security & Privacy

Given the sensitive nature of the documents it handles, Redactable boasts top-tier security protocols. Files are encrypted both in transit and at rest, and the platform adheres to strict compliance standards, including GDPR and CCPA. Perhaps most crucially for law firms, Redactable guarantees that your documents are not used to train its AI models—a reassurance for anyone concerned about client confidentiality or ethical obligations.

The Judgement

Redactable is a great option for firms that frequently handle documents requiring meticulous redaction. Its AI-powered approach simplifies a traditionally tedious process, ensuring accuracy and saving valuable time. For lawyers looking to secure their documents without sacrificing productivity, this is one platform that’s worth every redacted penny. With its focus on precision and privacy, Redactable is the perfect digital ally for the confidentiality-conscious legal professional.
