This Week's Review: Lexis+ AI

Lexis+AI Takes the Stand

The Virtual Law Clerk That Never Sleeps

Lexis+ AI is like having a legal research wizard and a document-drafting ninja all in one. Whether you need a quick summary of the law in a straightforward manner, razor-sharp case analysis or a brief that practically writes itself, Lexis+ AI delivers results faster than you can say "objection!"

Favorite law firm use cases: Legal Research; Case, Brief and Document Analysis; and Document Drafting for all-sized law firms.

Features & Functionality

Lexis+ AI distinguishes itself with a robust set of features designed to streamline legal research, document drafting, and case analysis, making it an invaluable tool for modern law firms. As one of the premiere legal research engines, it's no surprise to see Lexis+AI invest in a very responsive and robust tool. As Lexis+ AI combines traditional Lexis elements with some A.I. features mixed in, I've chosen to focus on the A.I. features in particular.

Upon login you jump right into the AI Assistant module. Its A.I.-powered natural language search engine allows users to query the system in plain English, removing the need for precise legalese or cumbersome keyword searches. This capability not only saves time but also improves the accuracy and relevance of the search results, making the research process far more efficient. Whether you're asking for recent cases on breach of fiduciary duty in a specific jurisdiction or trying to uncover obscure legal precedents, Lexis+ AI delivers the most pertinent findings without requiring constant query refinements.

AI Assistant Dashboard

I jumped right in to ask for elements of a particular cause of action, and considering Lexis has a robust statute and case law database, I expected high quality results. I was not disappointed. That said, I have heard of some users who feel the results are not robust enough depending on the research task. I would argue that this is the responsibility of the user. Since Lexis will point to case law and statute precedent, you can further refine results by directing the AI Assistant further.

A sample result

I liked the options that were given beyond the substantive response. Whether summarizing case law authority, or drafting a memo based on the results, the AI Assistant provides some useful default prompts. I had the system draft a memo based on the results and I found it to be a good first draft. As I have mentioned in previous reviews, ideally you are using any A.I. drafting support for a first draft so you don't have to start from scratch (If you are expecting a final product you will be disappointed). More than just an integrated research tool, it helps users draft initial legal documents such as motions, briefs, and contracts, seamlessly integrating research findings into the drafts. This feature is particularly useful for lawyers looking to support their arguments with up-to-date case law and statutes, saving hours typically spent cross-referencing research with drafting. The system suggests relevant legal precedent as you write, ensuring that your documents are both thorough and legally sound from the outset.

The Research Module

The Legal Research module is essentially the standard research interface you may have come to expect from Lexis. You can do that standard case citation input and find a case and it does not seem to be particularly A.I. driven, but what is A.I. driven is the A.I. generated case summary feature that accompanies any case you search. I ran an example from a recent search. It's great for a concise summary, much like what a law clerk might hand you to tell you if you are on the right track with the case.

An A.I. generated case summary

Lexis+ AI also provides advanced judicial analytics, offering insights into how specific federal district court judges have ruled in similar cases. This feature is useful for litigation strategy, as it allows lawyers to tailor their arguments based on the tendencies of the judge presiding over their case. It's more of a data aggregator tool and does not appear to be A.I. driven, although the possibility for A.I. to be applied and provide predictive analytics does not seem too far off. The Document Analysis module was very interesting. Once there you have the option to analyze a brief, compare briefs, or analyze an agreement. The brief analysis tool scans uploaded briefs to suggest overlooked cases, statutes, or legal principles, effectively acting as a final quality control check before filing. I love the use case for A.I. here, though reliability needs to be tested further. I was disappointed in the limited scope of the Agreement Analysis option which was limited to Asset Purchase, Stock Purchase or Merger agreements. I did perform a sample analysis of one such agreement, however, and I did like the analysis. I was able to dive in further to see some suggested clause changes.

The Document Analysis

Finally, while I can't say it is fully A.I. driven, Lexis+ AI’s precedent finder and citation checker further enhance the drafting process by ensuring all references are accurate and supported by reliable legal authority. The citation checker scans documents for errors, reducing the risk of submitting filings with incorrect or outdated citations, while the precedent finder identifies key cases based on trends and past rulings, offering deeper insight into legal arguments. ?

In summary, Lexis+ AI is designed not just to enhance legal research, but to act as a full-fledged digital assistant that anticipates the needs of legal professionals, providing relevant insights, improving drafting processes. It won't replace attorneys, but it can function like a rising 2L law clerk who knows just enough to give you a kick start on research and drafting.

Pricing & Plans

It's known that if you know a Lexis rep, Lexis+ AI can offer flexible pricing options tailored to law firms of all sizes. That said, the link to their store shows some eye popping pricing to the tune of just under $1,000/mo. Lexis encourages you to reach out to schedule a demo wherein you can look to negotiate a different pricing option. For the Lexis plans that do not feature an AI Assistant, starting plans for solo practitioners tend to be around $200 per month. Small and mid-sized firms can step up to more advanced features, including analytics and drafting assistance, at around $500 per month. Larger firms that require custom solutions and premium support can expect to pay upwards of $1,200 per month, though volume discounts are often available for bigger teams. Those numbers may help you to negotiate a better rate than that advertised Lexis+ AI pricing. I recommend reaching out to Lexis for a 2 day trial (I know, 2 days is not very long, but it is free). You will meet a rep and negotiate terms if you like the product. And considering the legal database is managed by Lexis, if you have any concerns about a smaller company's legal research resources, you have the peace of mind of working with Lexis. I will mention here that Lexis has a new version of their A.I. powered engine called Protégé that is set to release shortly. There is no pricing information, but it promises to be very powerful and it may be worth the wait to see the features.

What Makes It A.I. Enabled?

Lexis+ AI uses machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to deliver a truly intelligent legal assistant experience. Unlike simple automation, Lexis+ AI understands your queries and delivers not just results but insights. Its AI-driven capabilities go beyond mere search results, offering case analysis, drafting support, and predictive insights tailored to your practice. Whether you need jurisdiction-specific rulings or a polished draft, Lexis+ AI anticipates your needs and delivers exactly what you're looking for—without the dreaded hallucinations of less specialized AI systems.

Security & Privacy

If you’re worried about your client data ending up in the wrong hands or, worse, being used to train AI models, rest easy. Lexis+ AI is built with attorney-client confidentiality in mind. All data is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and the platform does not use your queries or documents to train its models. LexisNexis has made sure that GDPR and HIPAA compliance boxes are all ticked, giving you confidence that your clients’ sensitive information stays exactly where it should—under lock and key. Of all the research and drafting products, Lexis has a brand that can be trusted as it is one of the big two. And a read of the Privacy Policy reinforced my confidence.

The Judgement

Lexis+ AI is like the law clerk you’ve always dreamed of—hyper-competent, quick on the uptake, and with no distractions of still being in school with a final exam looming. Its AI-driven tools save you time, boost accuracy, and give you strategic insights that would otherwise take hours to uncover. Sure, the pricing is on the steeper side, but considering the time and stress you save, it’s a worthwhile investment. Whether you’re drafting documents or diving into complex legal research, Lexis+ AI has your back, making it an indispensable tool for any modern law firm.
