  • European Week for Safety and Health at Work, held each year in October (calendar week 43), the European Week for Safety and Health at Work is a highlight of every Healthy Workplaces Campaign. With hundreds of awareness-raising events taking place across the EU and beyond - and extra impetus given to media coverage - it is the ideal opportunity to get involved in the campaign. Organized by EU-OSHA and its partners, each European Week has the campaign theme at its heart and aims to raise awareness of the importance of active, participative workplace safety and health management.?   • In Abu Dhabi, the Pre-COP28, the preparatory meeting prior to the 28th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will take place in-person on 30-31 October 2023.

  • Minamata Convention COP-5 underway 30 October - 3 November 2023 | Geneva, Geneve, Switzerland
  • European Union Packaging & waste packaging: the Environment Committee will adopt its position on a draft bill introducing new sustainability requirements for the use and reuse of packaging (e.g. harmful chemicals restrictions, minimum amounts of recycled content), as well as limits on the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags and targets for reducing packaging, separate collection and recycling.

  • U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety, Meeting: Hearings to examine AI and the future of work.

  • AI Safety Summit - The UK will host a summit on the safety of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Bangkok, the fourth session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will be held at the United Nations Conference Centre and online from 1 to 3 November 2023.?
  • Climate Change 2023 underway 1-2 November 2023 | London, England, U.K.
  • European Union Net-Zero Industry Act: the Industry Committee will adopt its position on the so-called Net-Zero Industry Act, which aims to help the transition to a climate-neutral economy by supporting net-zero technology sectors such as wind turbines, electrolysers, batteries, solar panels and heat pumps. The global market for these sectors is projected to triple by 2030, showing the need to secure access to technologies essential for future energy systems.
  • The Indian government will launch a new "import management system" aimed at monitoring shipments of laptops, tablets and similar devices. This will require companies to register the quantity and value of imports.

GLOBAL ECONOMIC PULSE

  • The coming week is set to be a whirlwind of activity in the global financial scene with key events that could influence markets across the world. Leading the pack are the imminent interest rate verdicts from the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Japan.
  • Inflation in Indonesia is expected to rise to 2.7% year-on-year, possibly prompting further policy adjustments by Bank Indonesia.? Singapore's retail sales are projected to grow 1.8% year-on-year in September, boosted by increased visitor traffic. India's fiscal deficit is trending below the government's 5.9% full-year target, signaling a positive economic outlook.? Korean exports are expected to rise, led by cars and semiconductors, but a narrowing trade surplus and accelerating inflation are anticipated.? As for the United States, it's a bustling period for corporate earnings, painting a view of the economy. Some companies project optimism, while others reflect caution, leaving the market with diverging opinions.? Lastly, South Africa is gearing up for its annual Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, commonly known as the "mini budget," to be presented on November 1.
