Healthy diets cost poorest more, claims report
The most deprived fifth of the population would need to spend 50 percent of their disposable income on food to meet the cost of the Government’s recommended healthy diet, and healthier foods are over twice as expensive per calorie as less healthy foods, shows new data from the 2023’s edition of The Food Foundation’s?annual Broken Plate report . “We cannot hold people personally responsible for their diet if we do not create realistic choices, a healthy environment, a positive culture and a supply chain to match,” said Lord James Bethell, Conservative Peer. The Food Foundation data makes for damning reading when it comes to the effect our food policy has on healthcare, with nearly 9,600 diabetes-related amputations carried out on average per year – that’s an increase of 19 percent in six years. FSA and FSS launch new application system for regulated products
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have launched a new system that allows businesses to make applications for regulated products. Launched on 20 June 2023, the new?system ?helps businesses follow the correct procedure when it comes to securing the necessary authorisation to sell regulated food and feed products, according to the FSA. Labelling it as a “new, more efficient system”, the FSA has said that it was designed to make it “easier for applicants” to understand what information is required to submit a good-quality, complete application for their product. They go on to claim that it will be “particularly helpful” for new businesses and those that don’t traditionally recognise themselves as food or feed businesses, such as start-ups.?Read more.
The future of the Food Industry Intelligence Network, by Professor Chris Elliot
I have written about the Food Industry Intelligence Network (fiin) on a number of occasions in the past. The organisation was formed in 2015 following one of the recommendations I made in the 2014?Elliott Review ?following the?Horsemeat ?scandal. A number of Technical Directors from UK food companies came together to discuss how a system of intelligence sharing might operate. I doubt they and certainly myself could have guessed how fiin would develop over the next eight years. It has become the most remarkable of organisations run by the most remarkable of people.
