In this week's news: food flavours, cultivated pet food and marine heat wave
How is ADM moving the needle when it comes to food flavours?
The food flavours sector is one of the biggest in the food and beverage industry, valued at an estimated $12.4 billion .
With a market of that kind of size and scale, being truly innovative is a huge challenge. Consumers have huge expectations when it comes to flavour, and therefore so do manufacturers and retailers. That pressure travels up the chain and lands with people such as Angela Barnard, Senior Flavourist Citrus, and Sunarie Servais, EMEA Director of Product Marketing, Flavours, both at ADM.
Meatly and Omni unveil “world’s first” cultivated pet food
Through a partnership with Omni, Meatly, formerly known as “Good Dog Food”, has unveiled its new cans of pet food made using cultivated chicken as the protein source.
Meatly has shared its goal of becoming the first company in the world to sell cultivated meat for pets and has aims to become the first company to gain regulatory approval and sell cultivated meat-based products in the UK and Europe.
Will AI enhance or disrupt the fast food industry?
Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has announced that as a way to “ensure” British farmers’ products “get the recognition they deserve”, fairer food labelling measures have been proposed by the UK Government. According to Barclay, the proposals “ensure greater transparency around the origin of food and methods of production” and work towards “helping consumers make decisions that align with their values”.
Ocean food web “disrupted” by marine heat wave
A study carried out by Oregon State University has shed light on a marine heat wave that has been “[disrupting]” the ocean food web.
The researchers have explained that marine heat waves in the northeast Pacific Ocean are creating “ongoing and complex disruptions”, that on the one hand may “benefit some species”, but could also “threaten the future of many others”.
