3. King Charles’ annual Christmas broadcast topped the Christmas Day TV ratings, according to overnight data, with an average of 5.9m viewers. The ten-minute message was broadcast across BBC One, BBC Two and ITV, with the majority watching on BBC One. The BBC broadcast nine of the 10 most watched programmes on the day, with Strictly Come Dancing's Christmas Special drawing in 5.3m viewers ahead of Doctor Who in third place with 4.7m. The BBC said it “dominated the ratings", which do not include figures for programmes watched on catch-up services.

King's speech overnight viewing figures were down from last year's address, Charles' first as King, which was seen by 8.1m viewers. The sole ITV show in the top 10 on Christmas Day was Lee Mack-hosted gameshow The 1% Club Christmas Special, which was seen by 3.4m. The Guardian noted that ITV soaps, once a staple of high Christmas ratings, failed to make the December 25 top 10, with Coronation Street on 2.6m and Emmerdale on 1.9m.

She said: "There are 32 Last of the Summer Wine specials and 18 for Only Fools and Horses alone. It's a selection box that is a real treat to dive into."
