In this week's news: Consumers value animal welfare

Consumers value animal welfare more than sustainability, says new study

The treatment of animals rates higher than green issues when consumers choose meat and dairy products.

That’s according to a new study, which suggests that, while consumers consider sustainability important, other factors such as taste, quality and animal welfare take precedence in their purchasing decisions.

On product labels, consumers valued information regarding animal welfare, food safety, and health and nutrition. These results can help producers – particularly of sustainably produced food products – to market in a more targeted way and make them more attractive to consumers. Read more.

Could white bread be healthier?

Healthier white bread could soon appear on the shelves of bakers and grocers across the UK thanks to research at Aberystwyth University.

Protein gel developed to break down alcohol in the body

In the future, a gel could be taken orally to prevent blood alcohol levels from rising and acetaldehyde from damaging the body, limiting the cause of many health problems caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

Most alcohol enters the bloodstream via the mucous membrane layer of the stomach and the intestines. These days, the consequences of this are undisputed: even small amounts of alcohol impair people’s ability to concentrate and to react, increasing the risk of accidents. In addition, drinking large quantities on a regular basis is detrimental to one’s health: common consequences include liver disease, inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around three million people die every year from excessive alcohol consumption. Read more.

UK Government pledges to boost innovation in farming

During the Farm to Fork Summit, hosted by Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the UK at Downing Street, the UK Government revealed support plans for British farmers.

According to the government, the package will help in “grow[ing] the UK’s farming and food sector” through supporting domestic food production, bolstering innovation in the sector and assisting it in “reaching its economic potential”. As well as this the government has claimed that it will aid in recruiting the next generation of farming and food leaders. Read more.
