This week's Living Room Sessions: The New Collective Narrative; The Post-Pandemic City; How to Journal; Book Reading

In the House of Beautiful Business' virtual Living Room last week, we discussed whether the future is Asian, explored opportunities in adversity, and made encouragement signs for neighbors, strangers, and the world.

Tomorrow, Sunday, we will premiere the House Concert, followed by an invitation to co-write "The New Collective Narrative" together with our friends from More in Common – an effort that is more about sensing than sensemaking, as I argue in this piece about the stories we all need to write now.

And there are more Living Rooms Sessions all week for you to learn, listen, and discuss! Attendance is free.

The New Collective Narrative

Explore, Debate, and Co-Write It

The COVID-19 pandemic has only created greater urgency for what research by the nonprofit organization More in Common has shown: that members of Western societies are longing for a new aspirational project, a new collective narrative that helps us overcome social and political polarization and unites us in building a better future after the crisis. What might that narrative look like? Join Mathieu Lefevre, co-founder and CEO of More in Common, and Gemma Mortensen, chief navigator at The New Constellation Project, for a discussion and collective writing exercise to get us started.

The Post-Pandemic City

Rapid urbanization, climate change, and a hyper-connected society offer space for a new way of understanding and designing urban spaces, and at the same time, they invite infectious diseases, such as the coronavirus, to spread much faster and emerge more often. How will the pandemic reshape cities and neighborhoods? Together with architect and researcher Itai Palti, founder of Conscious Cities and Hume, a science-informed architecture and urban design practice, and Kristina Palovicova, co-founder of Secret City Trails, we will explore the utopias of cities and neighborhoods that deserve a place in the world.

Journal Your Way Through Anything

Abraham Lincoln, Leonardo Da Vinci, Maya Angelou – some of the most acclaimed creative souls have kept private journals. In a digital world shaken by a global pandemic, returning to pen and paper, and exploring your own personal way of visual thinking will help you focus, day by day. Facilitated by Sophie Kleber, the head of UX Spaces at Google, you will learn about the beauty of journaling, followed by a do-it-yourself exercise to start what might become a new habit. Bring a fresh journal (ideally with dots, not lines), your favourite pen or pencil, and a small ruler.
