The results obtained in this study confirm the involvement of commensal microbiota in the antitussive effect of FCM. This is a first step to outline the mechanism of action involved in FCM and open perspectives for therapeutic use of this plant. (read more)
Berberine decreased the expression of pro-inflammatory factors such as NOD2, NLRP3, TLR4, and MyD88. With berberine treatment, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes was increased significantly, suggesting that berberine could change the intestinal microbiota and improve the intestinal carcinogenesis. It is intriguing that spermidine inhibits both the hepatic lipid accumulation and the associated liver inflammation. While the underlying mechanisms remain to be clarified, the findings suggest that spermidine ameliorates NAFLD through activation of thyroid hormone-responsive protein signaling and the gut microbiota-mediated transformation of bile acids.
