It's been impossible to ignore the ongoing strife both domestically and globally, the divisive narratives, the sensationalism and the clickbait that dominates our newsfeeds — all of which are impacting on our mental health and workplace morale. So, this week, instead of my usual format, I'd like to share a practice rooted in loving-kindness and compassion called Metta Meditation.
What is Metta Meditation?
Metta meditation, also known as loving-kindness meditation, is a practice that, while originating from Buddhist teachings, stands on its own emphasizing universal human values like empathy and caring.
The practice typically involves sitting quietly and generating feelings of goodwill, kindness, and warmth first towards oneself and then gradually extending that outward to others—first to friends and family, then to acquaintances, and ultimately to all living beings, including those with whom one may have difficulties or animosity.
It is a time taken to pause and reconnect with our individual and collective humanity.
Metta in the Modern Workplace
In the context of our professional lives, Metta meditation can be a powerful practice. It fosters an atmosphere where empathetic leadership can thrive, nurturing a supportive and resilient workplace. By regularly engaging in the practice, leaders and employees alike can develop a more inclusive approach, enhance communication, and strengthen team cohesion.

A Call for Collective Compassion
As we navigate through times of conflict and uncertainty, both on a global scale and within our own communities, it is more important than ever to foster an environment of compassion and understanding.
In the face of all of this fear, pain, and suffering, let’s commit to being agents of change.
