THURSDAY SPOTLIGHT: ASSESSING YOUR TEACHING MODEL
Did you know, on average, an educator makes four decisions every minute daily?
That's not a shocking number, considering the multifaceted role educators play.
But here's another area that requires regular attention. ??
Evaluation of the seamless integration of future-focused learning into the school curriculum is absolutely crucial, especially given the constantly changing dynamics of the world of work.?
Here are?five?foundational aspects to examine to assess if your educational approach is anchored in a 20th-century model rather than evolving with 21st-century demands:
? Assess the extent to which technology like interactive digital platforms, educational software, and online resources to enhance learning is integrated into your teaching practices.
? Evaluate if your teaching approach is teacher-centred (where the teacher is the primary source of knowledge and students are passive recipients) or student-centred (where students actively participate, collaborate, and engage in learning activities).

? Look at whether your school predominantly focuses only on standardised tests or uses a variety of assessment methods, including project-based assessments and portfolios, which evaluate a broader range of student skills.
? Examine whether your curriculum emphasises 'acquisition of content knowledge' rather than developing a broader set of skills like critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and emotional intelligence.
? Consider how well your curriculum incorporates global perspectives and cultural diversity by integrating lessons that promote understanding different cultures, languages, and international issues and preparing students for a globally interconnected world.?
There is always more and more work to be done in these and several other areas, such as sustainability education and social-emotional learning.
These evaluations can guide necessary changes and innovations in your educational approach, ensuring that we're all optimally future-proofing students.
Because the future is now.
UPDATES THAT MATTER: THURSDAY TOP THREE ??
The latest news: ?
1?? One-word judgements: Will we see an end to single-word assessments of schools in the UK, such as 'Outstanding' or 'Inadequate'? UK MPs are urging to end this form of assessment, emphasising that schools should not automatically be graded as 'inadequate' for minor safeguarding issues, expressing concerns about strained relationships and low trust in Ofsted. However, most in the sector still wanted 'strong accountability' in schools.
Why it matters: It signifies a push towards more comprehensive and fair school evaluations in the UK, addressing concerns about oversimplified grading and trust in the inspection system. (Via BBC)
2?? Arab world education: The Fourth International Conference on Education in the Arab World, focusing on challenges and solutions, took place last week in Jeddah. Attended by academics, researchers, and students from Arab nations, the event addressed advancements and challenges in education.
Why it matters: The conference is a key event contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of education in the region. (Via Arab News)
3?? Life expectancy: A study shows that each year of schooling improves life expectancy.?Evidence from various countries indicated that an adult's mortality risk decreases by 2% for each year of full-time education, with complete education reducing death risk by 34%. It also underscored the health benefits of education and suggested that policies encouraging longer school attendance could significantly extend life expectancy.
Why it matters: It highlights the critical link between the impact of education and students' long-term health and well-being. (Via The Guardian)?
