WEEKLY WHITEBOARD ??

WEEKLY WHITEBOARD ??

How can we help accelerate progress towards equality in the classroom??

That's what's on the agenda today as we celebrate International Women's Day (IWD)! ♀?

In last week's?Weekly Whiteboard, we dove into passion-led learning. This week, we'll shine a light on how you can celebrate IWD in the classroom!

Did you know that, according to UNICEF, approximately 129 million girls worldwide are not attending school? While enrollment rates for primary and secondary education are nearing equality, there remains a significant gap in completion rates.

Bottom line: It's getting better, but there's still work to be done.?

This year, the theme for International Women's Day is 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' with a focus on addressing economic disempowerment.??

With that in mind, here's what we'll cover in this edition:

  • Classroom activities for IWD: Engaging activities you can try today ???
  • Updates that matter:
  • ??UNESCO: Investing in girls' education pays off.?
  • ??Women leaders: Women lead 25% of the world's top universities.
  • ?? English proficiency: Ofsted raises concerns over teaching in the UK.

The wacky 'learning' fact of the week:

?? Feeling like your head's jam-packed with info? Science says, probably not. Your brain’s storage capacity is considered virtually unlimited. It consists of about 86 billion neurons. Each neuron connects with other neurons, adding up to one quadrillion connections. As these combine, storage capacity increases.

FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: IWD CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

How can we engage students in activities that inspire an inclusive mindset??

For one, we can look to the official International Women's Day resources.?

Its website features a great set of activity cards that you can cut up, mix up, and then lucky-dip the options.

For example:

  • Develop a list of the qualities you see in women leaders.
  • Create a cartoon strip featuring a girl or woman as the hero.
  • Draw a woman or girl you respect and add some words to describe her.

Check out the full activity sheet here.

Bonus: Check out this resource for 2024 — 5 ways we can lift up girls as leaders.

TOP THREE EDUCATION UPDATES THAT MATTER??

The latest news: ?

1?? Girls' education: A UNESCO fact sheet released on IWD highlights the significant progress made in girls' education. It shows that investment in this area yields considerable results, evidenced by there now being fewer girls out of school compared to boys, and more women enrolled in higher education.

Why it matters:?Despite these achievements, challenges persist, including entrenched gender disparities in STEM education. (Via UNESCO)

2?? Women-led universities: For the first time, women lead 25% of the world's top 200 universities. This is a milestone that highlights gradual but positive progress towards gender equality in academic leadership, despite previous leadership challenges faced by female presidents in elite institutions.?

Why it matters: This reflects a broader movement towards increased representation of women in academic leadership. (Via University Business)

3?? English concerns: Ofsted has expressed concerns about the effectiveness of teaching writing and spoken language in UK primary and secondary schools. The inspectorate highlighted that while reading curricula have advanced, there is uncertainty about how to support students who struggle.?

Why it matters: This is despite noting significant improvements in reading instruction since the phonics screening check was introduced.? (Via Tes)
