News: Major milestone in UK’s race to net zero maritime with £77 million boost
The government is today launching a new £77m scheme to support the deployment of clean maritime vessels and infrastructure.?
The Department for Transport claims this to be the first time in UK history the government is intervening to specifically target this level of funding on green maritime technology which is already well developed. The funding will take the tech from the factory to the sea – identifying which projects will have a long-term impact in reducing emissions.
Successful projects must show they could use this money to work with major?UK?ports and operators to launch a zero-emission vessel by 2025 at the latest.
Examples of such technology include battery electric vessels, shoreside electrical power, ships running on low carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia, and wind-assisted ferries.
Maritime UK Chief Executive, Ben Murray, said:?“This funding will help to drive a much-needed increase in investment into green maritime technology and infrastructure, delivering real-world solutions in the water by 2025.
“As well as meeting our own domestic decarbonisation targets, this and future investment can help capitalise on a generational opportunity to lead globally, exporting the solutions maritime businesses across the world need to decarbonise their own operations. Domestic investment and international exports will create tens of thousands of well-paid, high-quality jobs across the UK.?
“We warmly welcome this latest funding and look forward to working with government to maximise its impact, leveraging further investment in months ahead.”
Companies and universities are urged to register for forthcoming briefing and networking events to support consortia building for the competition:
