News: Independent Net Zero Review published
On Monday the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published the?final independent report of the Net Zero Review , commissioned by former prime minister Liz Truss MP and chaired by former BEIS minister Chris Skidmore MP.
The report, titled ‘Mission Zero’, outlines 129 recommendations to achieve within the next decade in order to attain net zero carbon. Overall, the report criticizes government for failing to match its ambitious rhetoric on net zero with an equally ambitious policy track record. Pointing to the advantages in leading the race to net zero in terms of enhanced economic growth and future job creation, Skidmore notes that the UK has to make the choice on whether it wants to be a leader in this context or just be an observer from the sidelines.
Maritime UK contributed to the call for evidence within the process of the Net Zero Review and the report cites Maritime UK’s assessment that “although government and industry have both made a substantive start towards decarbonisation, there is a need to increase the scale and pace of this joint effort.”
Ports: Help identify future skills needs?
Ports are being reminded to respond to a major skills survey that has been initiated to inform strategic workforce planning and identify skills shortages.?
In December, the Maritime Skills Commission announced a new partnership with Port Skills and Safety to deliver the first Skills Intelligence Model for the maritime sector. The model is being delivered through the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR).
The project was welcomed by the Chair of the MSC, Graham Baldwin:?“I am delighted that this first piece of sector modelling is underway. We all know the value of robust evidence to inform work programmes and we also know we achieve more when we learn from others. That’s what this work does. Building upon the experience of the rail industry we will have a robust and valuable picture of skills in the ports industry. We will then be able to roll the model out to the rest of the maritime sector. We’re very pleased to partner with PSS to deliver this work.”?
Ports have until 15 February to?respond .?
News: Maritime projects receive levelling-up funding
Following the announcement of the second round of ‘Levelling Up’ funding from the Government, Maritime UK has welcomed the inclusion of a number of projects focused on the sector and more broadly on our vitally important coastal communities around the United Kingdom.
Maritime is known to make a massive contribution to the country’s economy, being worth £116 billion and supporting over a million jobs, and has a major contribution to make to levelling up the country as a whole. But we also know that coastal areas are amongst the most challenged economically and are in ongoing need of investment. Research previously released by Maritime UK show that almost half of our coastal communities’ young are being driven away from their hometowns through lack of jobs, and unless government continues to deliver support, more are likely to follow.

Green Skills: Helps us to identify skills gaps
Maritime UK is calling on maritime businesses to help the Maritime Skills Commission (MSC) to identify green skills gaps.
The findings from this new survey will feed into the Skills for Green Jobs report, will shed some light on the green skills shortage in the maritime sector, and ultimately assist in populating a comprehensive matrix highlighting the demand and supply of green skills training both on a regional and national scale.
The survey is part of the MSC's?Skills for Green Jobs workstream .?
Levelling-Up: Maritime UK meets Select Committee Chair
Maritime UK met with Clive Betts MP, the Chair of the Levelling-Up Select Committee this week to discuss the role of the sector in accelerating economic growth in coastal towns and cities across the UK. Ahead of a committee session next week with the levelling-up Minister Dehenna Davison, Maritime UK members discussed their response to an inquiry on?funding , the role of clusters in driving the levelling-up mission, and the Maritime UK?Coastal Powerhouse Manifesto , which includes a series of recommendations of how to unlock private investment in coastal areas.?
Register: Maritime Leaders Forum to focus on building consortia
The second session of the Maritime Leaders Forum will be held on Monday 13 February at Trinity House. Dr Iain Percy, CEO of Artemis Technologies, will lead the forum on how businesses can build successful consortia to deliver international success, attract funding and accelerate progress towards our climate change objectives.
The forum is an opportunity for you to influence policy and share best practice with other leaders, as we work to energise the UK Maritime Sector while meeting the national and international Climate Change objectives. Iain Percy will make a keynote presentation which will be followed by an exchange of ideas and questions. At the conclusion of the formal session there will be a networking reception. As leaders, we face shared challenges, right across the maritime sector. Trinity House and Maritime UK have recognised the need to bring leaders together to discuss their approach to shared challenges, share practicable actions and discuss future priorities for action from both government and industry.
