Astronergy this week

  1. Another new Astronergy manufacturing base saw its first module rolling out

After only 99 days of construction and debugging, #AstronergySongyuan Manufacturing Base saw its First n-type TOPCon #PVmodules rolling out from production line on Dec. 15.?

Marking another 2GW TOPCon module production capacity was added in Astronergy. ASTRO N modules capacity will hit 30GW in 2023 and are certainly fastening their pace to go around the world.

PV industry brief news this week

  1. World to expand renewable energy capacity by 75% by 2027, says IEA

Solar, wind and other renewable energy sources are expected to continue building momentum, with installed capacity set to grow by about 2,400 GW through 2027, according to the IEA.

2. Australian science agency to back domestic silicon, solar supply chain

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has urged the Australian government to develop a domestic solar manufacturing industry. A new report warns that the high concentration of global silicon and PV cell supply chains pose real risks to national energy security.

3. Environmental Clearance for Gigantic 4.6 GW Solar Complex In Brazil

The State Council for the Environment (Coema) in Brazil’s Ceara state has given environmental approval to a gigantic 4.6 GW solar power project proposed by Omega Energia that’s planned to provide clean energy to green hydrogen production plans of Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI).

4. France introduces solar requirement for parking lots

France's National Assembly has approved new provisions to make it mandatory to install PV systems at parking lots with surface areas of more than 1,500 square meters.

5. EU aims for 30 GW of solar module production by 2025

EIT InnoEnergy, an independent body of the European Union that supports innovation in the sustainable energy industry, says it will act as the secretariat for the new EU Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance, which aims to rebuild the solar module manufacturing industry in Europe.

6. Portugal goes in for environmental licensing reform

The Government of Portugal has come out with a new legislative package called Ambiente+Simples to ease environmental licensing for renewable energy projects, one of which includes elimination of mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) for solar power plants and inverters occupying less than 100-hectare space.

7. French solar tender concludes with final average price of $0.08112/kWh

France's Ministry of Ecological Transition has published the results of the second round of the new PPE2 tender scheme for ground-mounted solar installations.

The French authorities selected 32 wind and solar projects, totalling 501 MW. Fifteen PV plants account for approximately 180 MW of the capacity, with the largest project reaching 30 MW.

8. US government allocates $8 million to support agrivoltaics

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has announced the Foundational Agrivoltaic Research for Megawatt Scale (FARMS) funding, which has allocated $8 million for six solar energy research projects across six states and the District of Columbia.

9. European PPA prices increased by 7.4% in November

European prices for power purchase agreements rose in several countries in November, with the Polish index recording an increase of 19.4%. Portugal registered an increase of 15.5%, followed by Spain at 15.7%. Germany was the only country that recorded a monthly decline, with prices falling by 0.8%.

Eyes on PV tech-related

  1. Heterojunction germanium solar cell with 8.6% efficiency

Japanese scientists have developed a heterojunction germanium solar cell with the biggest area ever achieved for the tech. It has an open-circuit voltage of 291 mV, a short-circuit current of 45.0 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.656.

2. Hydrophobic nanocoating to reduce soiling in solar panels

Scientists in Egypt have created a self-cleaning, hydrophobic coating for solar panels that reportedly increases their efficiency by more than 30%. They used a coating solution based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanocomposites, mixed with ethanol and isopropanol.

3. Tracking environmental performance improvements in solar modules

New life-cycle assessment (LCA) data for PV systems confirms that greenhouse gas emissions from 1 kWh of solar electricity are far lower than emissions from fossil-fuel power plants. The difference has been fairly constant since 2018, but has improved substantially since when IEA PVPS started reporting on this measure in 1996.

4. Color-sensing tech to remove dirt from solar panels

South African researchers have developed a new cleaning system for solar panels that uses a color-sensing light-to-frequency converter to detect dirt. It can reportedly remove around 95% of the dust from a PV panel in less than a minute, at a lower cost than other systems.
