Suntech’s Comeback - Showcasing Duty-Free Solar Modules for US Market: The global PV industry is facing multiple headwinds in the form of an oversupply situation and the imposition of tariffs and duties on China-manufactured products as well as a few Southeast Asian countries. Challenges notwithstanding, it has also created some windows of opportunity for some global PV manufacturers looking to gain a foothold in the lucrative US market. In this context, Suntech, once a market leader, has been sailing through rough waters for quite some time and is now striving to regain its position in the US market share. The company showcased its wide range of products at RE+ 2024, which it expects to produce at its upcoming Indonesian factory. Given it is a market that’s still out of the purview of the US’ non-tariff trade barrier and anti-dumping & countervailing duties (AD/CVD), Suntech expects to offer Indonesia-manufactured products to US customers. The Global Sales and Marketing President of Suntech, Michael Li, showcased the company’s Ultra X, Ultra X Pro, and Ultra V Pro module series, covering PERC, TOPCon, and other modules. SolarSpace Expands Global Reach: New Solar Cells & Modules at RE+ 2024: Over the last few years, multiple leading Chinese PV manufacturers have diversified a certain percentage of their total production capacities outside mainland China. The main drivers behind this move have been the country-specific non-tariff trade barriers against the import of PV cells and modules from certain countries of origin. In addition, the US recently imposed a 50% tariff hike on imported Chinese solar cells and announced a resumption and extension of anti-dumping and countervailing duties (AD/CVD) to more Southeast Asian countries. These only further underscore the need for Chinese cell makers to devise a diversification strategy. China-based SolarSpace, a well-known solar cell vendor recently turned module maker, is unique in that it has built production capacity in Laos. The company’s Corporate Vice President, James Hu, spoke about the rationale behind this move and the company’s business strategy for the US market at RE+ 2024. For the interview, click here.

The company mainly promoted its latest Infinity series modules at the show. Beyond the technical attributes, the product's USP is that it is made in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country still out of the purview of the US’ non-tariff trade barrier and anti-dumping & countervailing duties (AD/CVD).?DMEGC’s new factory in Indonesia has both cell and module manufacturing capacity. DMEGC's global sales director Leon Lu believes the company can offer cost-effective quality products to US customers with Indonesia as a strategic manufacturing location. Fraunhofer ISE Produces Tandem Solar Cell With 31.6% Efficiency: Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has produced a new 1 cm2 perovskite silicon tandem solar cell with 31.6% efficiency, calling it the highest efficiency to date for a perovskite silicon solar cell made from an industrially-textured silicon heterojunction (HJT) solar cell, and using the hybrid deposition route for the perovskite layer. It explains that during the manufacturing process, the perovskite layer on the top cell was deposited on an industrially-textured silicon HJT cell, using a hybrid manufacturing route. Both of these are important prerequisites for the industrial production of such cells, according to the institute. For the complete story, click here.
