Canvas Discussion?(noun)?

  1. A?typical assignment?for students in both high school and college, usually requiring a?personal post and response?to others' posts?
  2. The bane of said students' existence, as most will copy and paste or?use meaningless sentences?to hit the word count
  3. Source for countless social media posts, from?affirmations?to?flirting?(yes, I have been hit on through Canvas pick-up lines)?

As students head back to school, they face the first school year since 2020 not marred with large COVID-19 restrictions. Though we hope to return to "normal," a sentiment has developed that?there is no normal anymore. With large stunts in learning, teacher shortages, and a lack of interpersonal communication, 2022 is a?watershed year?for academic development.?

?For those in college, this new year signifies an onslaught of financial and academic pressure, as students recover from loss of both paid opportunities and instructional time due to the pandemic. Princeton University has been applauded this past week for?waiving college costs?for all students whose families make under $100,000 yearly — around?25% of their body. In their statement, Princeton explained, "Princeton’s generous financial aid program has?transformed the socioeconomic diversity?of our undergraduate student population, allowing more students from across backgrounds to?learn from one another’s life experiences." The?College Board reports?that private four-years cost, on average,?$38,070. Princeton's decision makes students like myself hopeful for more change to counter rising costs globally.?

?For faculty, a different movement is developing. From American University to Eastern Michigan University to Rider University, professors and TAs are joining together to?protest poor conditions. Seattle public schools have?pushed back?their starting date due to teacher strikes. These workers' messaging is simple: fair?pay, mental and physical?health?resources, and conducive use of university?money.

?These three scenes all show the?importance of prioritizing education?in a time when we have seen up to?two decades?of progress lost in adolescents nationwide.??Both educators and students deserve a productive environment to learn and develop young minds —?more important than any profit.?
