Selling with words: what early-stage startup founders tend to get wrong

Katarina Howard, who prefers to go by Sam, is a conversion copywriter and messaging strategist who delivered a presentation on crafting website copy that converts. With extensive experience working with early-stage startups, Sam shared valuable insights on optimizing website messaging to engage prospects and drive conversions.

Top Takeaways:

  1. To create effective website copy, founders must understand their audience and address their pain points, goals, and objections. By putting themselves in their prospects' shoes, they can craft messaging that resonates and builds trust. "Empathy is the only consistent quality across all lists of great salespeople."
  2. "Websites that sell have to work harder than salespeople because they do not have that feedback loop that helps them constantly get better." Unlike sales conversations, websites lack the real-time feedback that allows for continuous improvement. Founders must invest time in researching their audience, testing their messaging, and incorporating feedback to optimize their website copy.
  3. Effective website copy showcases the product's features and benefits in a way that is relevant and easily understandable to the target audience. By clearly demonstrating how the product solves their problems, founders can increase the likelihood of conversion. "Ideally, you are not making the same mistake that comes up a lot for me in messaging tests. You're showing your product and you're making it very easy to see how those features work for your prospect."
  4. Launching a website is just the beginning. Founders must continually monitor visitor behavior, gather feedback, and iterate on their messaging to improve performance. This ongoing process is crucial for creating a website that truly acts as a 24/7 salesperson. "You will only know once you launch and you start monitoring what's going on. And even then, ideally, you continue this conversation, whether you're adding forms or you are asking those during your sales calls."
