1. South West Renewable Energy Zone in NSW Secures Four-Fold Interest from Indicative Target
The first tender for the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Access Rights in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has seen interest from projects amounting to around 15GW of solar PV, wind and energy storage.
Confirmed today (12 September), both the Australian Electricity Market Operator (AEMO) Services and NSW government confirmed that registered interest in the fifth tender figure is around four times the indicative target, which was set at 3.98GW.

2. Ireland Backs 960MW of Solar Capacity in Latest Renewable Energy Support Scheme
Provisional results from the fourth round of the Irish Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS 4) reveal that approximately 1,334 MW of onshore renewable electricity won support.
Of that total, 960MW of solar PV and 374MW onshore wind was procured at an average auction price of €96.85 (£81.73) per MWh, lower than the two previous auctions. The generation-weighted average price for solar projects was €104.76 per MWh.

3. India Requests Comments as It Looks to Add Cells to ALMM
The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has called for comments on its proposed addition of cells to India's Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
The request for comments is open to actors from across the Indian solar industry, and they will have until 6 October 2024 to submit their proposals to the MNRE. In addition, the ministry has proposed a number of new rules pertaining to the inclusion of solar cells in the ALMM, which are scheduled to come into force on 1 April 2026.

4. PV Manufacturing in US up Nearly Fourfold since IRA Introduction
Solar manufacturing capacity in the US has nearly quadrupled in the two years since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) became law, a new report reveals.
According to the 'US Solar Market Insight Q3 2024' published today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and analysts Wood Mackenzie, solar manufacturing capacity in the US now stands at over 31GW, with over 10GW added in the second quarter of 2024 alone.

5. Lebanon Launches Tender for 8 MW Solar Plant
Lebanon's Minister of Energy and Water has kicked off a tender for an 8 MW solar plant near the Beirut River. The Beirut River Solar Snake project will be publicly funded and connected to the medium-voltage grid, providing power to Electricité du Liban. Developers have until Oct. 23 to submit bids.
Lebanon's solar sector has grown rapidly since 2020, driven by off-grid solar and battery installations for homes and businesses. In May 2023, the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) projected that the country would surpass 1 GW of solar rooftops by June 2023. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Lebanon reached 1,005 MW of cumulative installed solar capacity at the end of 2023.

6. Algeria's PV Capacity Tops 436.8 MW
The Algerian Commission for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CEREFE) has released the latest statistics for Algeria's renewable energy sector.
By the end of 2023, Algeria's total renewable energy capacity had reached 600.9 MW, which includes hydroelectric power. Without hydroelectric power, total capacity stood at 472 MW, including 47.85 MW from off-grid sources.
Solar leads in renewable electricity production, with 436.8 MW of capacity. Around 388.95 MW (82.4%) of the PV total is connected to the grid, and 47.85 MW (10.1%) is off-grid.
