1. European Space Agency mulling Feasibility of Space-Based Solar Power

The ESA has shared project details for an initiative designed to harvest the sun’s energy in space before wirelessly transmitting it to receiving stations on Earth.

?

The Solaris initiative plans to beam down energy from orbit to back up weather-dependent renewables. ESA said it is investigating the feasibility of developing the project alongside policymakers, energy suppliers and space companies. It aims to make an informed decision by the end of 2025 on how to proceed with a development program.?ESA said the uninterrupted nature and scalable potential of space-based solar power could offer a solution to current and future energy challenges.

2. India Releases Draft Guidelines for Residential Rooftop?Solar Subsidies

India's MNRE has released draft guidelines for the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme, which is designed to support the installation of rooftop solar (RTS) plants in 10 million households with subsidy support from the central government.

?

The key objective of the scheme is to help provide free or low-cost electricity to 10 million households with up to 300 units of electricity per month by installing rooftop solar. The scheme will be implemented until March 31, 2027.?The MNRE said that the Phase II Grid Connective Rooftop Solar Programme, with a budget of INR 118.14 billion ($1.4 billion) until 2025-26, will persist until the introduction of the new scheme.

3. EC Announces European Solar Charter to Support PV Manufacturing

The European Commission has announced the ESC in a bid to support the ailing European solar manufacturing sector. The document sets out a series of voluntary actions, including accelerated permitting for solar deployment and PV manufacturing projects, as well as “ambitous non-price criteria” in public procurement, renewable energy auctions, and other support schemes.

?

The charter was signed in Brussels on Monday by representatives of the 23 EU member states, the European Commission, and several industry bodies, including the European Solar Manufacturing Council (ESMC) and SolarPower Europe (SPE).?The signatories have committed to supporting “the competitiveness of the European PV manufacturing industry and promoting the creation of a market for high-quality products meeting high sustainability and resilience criteria, in full respect of the EU’s climate and energy objectives,” according to the European Commission.

4. France to Tender 240 MW of Solar Capacity along Highways

France's Regional Highways Division (DIR) plans to launch a series of tenders to deploy 240 MW of solar capacity along the country's highway network this month.?The DIR, the Cerema mobility research center, and the French Treasury have already identified 140 car parking areas with a total surface of 38.7 hectares. This includes around 100 interchanges for 162.4 hectares – a figure likely to change because the selection process is not yet complete.

?

“In total, the estimated power of this PV potential is 240 MW, representing more than 7.5% of projects connected to the French electricity network in 2023,” said Kévin Guichard, project director of Fin Infra, a government-run agency that advises public entities on their investment projects.

5. SEIA and US Solar Leaders Call on Congress to Support Legislation to Ease Solar Permitting and Transmission

The US Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) has sent a letter, containing close to 200 signatures from solar and storage companies in the US, to the US Congress, calling on the body to accelerate legislative reform for solar projects in the US.

?

The letter, dated 11 April,?calls on the government to streamline four aspects of solar legislation: permitting, siting, transmission and access to public lands. The signatories argue that the current solar and storage permitting processes are “overly complex and time-consuming”, and in need of standardisation, and that legislators should designate priority sites for use by solar and storage developers, to eliminate “land use conflicts and restrictions.”
