PV market news this week:

1. SunWiz: Australia's Rooftop Solar PV Market Sees 23% Growth in July

Solar consultancy group SunWiz's latest research covering July 2024 has found that Australia's rooftop solar PV market has returned to growth with a 23% month-on-month increase in deployment.

Indeed, the group's research said that volumes reached 302MW, a record level for the mid-year interval (from April to October) and the fifth-best month on record. This will be a welcome sign, given that June 2024's statistics revealed the market had dropped to their lowest point since January, with 247MW installed.

2. Global PV Investment to Surpass $500 Billion in 2024

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that investment in solar photovoltaics will exceed $500 billion in 2024, surpassing the combined investment in all other electricity generation sources.

According to the World Energy Investment 2024 report from the IEA, total energy spending, including fuels and infrastructure, will exceed $3 trillion for the first time this year. Of that, $2 trillion will be directed toward clean energy technologies.

3. Chilean Government Proposes Solar FIT Cut for Distributed Generation

The Chilean Ministry of Energy is considering to reduce feed-in tariff for distributed generation (PMGD) for the purpose of raising funds for the extension of the electricity subsidy.

The Chilean Association of Renewable Energy and Storage (Acera), the Chilean Solar Energy Association (Acesol) and the Association of Small and Medium Generators (GPM A.G.) have responded with a joint statement in which they "express their deep concern and opposition to the recent proposal". The coalition says the proposal "significantly alters the remuneration scheme of the PMGD by taking away, through an arbitrary mechanism, revenues from projects with investments already made".

4. Romania Approves CfD Scheme, Tenders 500MW Solar PV in 2024

Romania's Ministry of Energy has approved the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme which seeks to attract 5GW of solar PV and wind capacity by the end of 2025.

Originally expected to be launched last year, the first round of the CfD will instead happen later this year, while the second round will take place in the third quarter of 2025. ?????

5. Israel Mandates Rooftop Solar on New Big Buildings, Targets 3.5 GW by 2040

The Israeli National Planning and Building Council has approved regulations requiring new buildings to install rooftop PV systems, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The rules apply to all new non-residential buildings with rooftop areas of more than 250 square meters and detached residential buildings with roofs larger than 100 square meters.

"We estimate that these historic regulations will lead to the installation of tens of thousands of additional renewable energy production facilities, with a total installed capacity of up to 3,500 megawatts by 2040," the ministry said.
