People with maturity understand a great truth; they understand that life comes with challenges. In being able to accept this fact about life, mature people learn to handle life in all of its difficulties.
Okay, where am I going with all of this? So on Friday while I was driving to a meeting, my car got stuck, in the middle of the highway obstructing traffic. I couldn't move it off the highway (because it wouldn't go into neutral) to the side/shoulder of the road. It was right there, in the middle of a travel lane.Calmly I turned on my hazard lights. I was just thinking what an inconvenience! However I remained calm and managed the situation.Bravely I got out of the car and placed a reflective triangle behind it to alert traffic and then got back inside and called for help.
Why am I narrating this story, you may wonder.I have committed to carry out weekly reflections on and evaluation of my experiences, leanings, practice to encourage insights into my life. After wandering in thought through the harrowing situation, trying to make sense of it, I came to this conclusion;
I am not my emotions
I always have a choice
Years ago, my emotions would have gotten the better of me- I would have panicked, became angry, anxious, embarrassed, sad, even cried....).
This was an important lesson for me because it shows that I have successfully established the emotional intelligence necessary to understand that lifes difficulties are the cutting edge of what distinguishes one from being a success or a failure.
I managed to get help however my car is still at the garage and I spent the weekend at home learning to grow emotionally and mentally.
