There have been key times in my life where things have got really challenging for a variety of complex reasons and I have wanted to run away. What I've learned as my career has advanced is that it's a really normal reaction and that it's about the different parts of ourselves jostling for position. Those parts might be familiar to you: anxiety, sadness, compassion and anger. Some of the most important work I do with people as a psychologist is to empower the quieter parts to be recognised and embraced.?
One of these challenging times for me in my career was when I was during my doctorate on one of my clinical placements where there were some difficulties within my supervision relationship. It was incredibly painful and affected all areas of my life: sleep, confidence, friendships, professional confidence and more.?I recall thinking that it happened at an earlier stage of my training and it might have made me wonder whether I was cut out for being a clinical psychologist. Thankfully, I was able to power through it and come out the other side confident to complete my training.??
I'm really hoping nothing goes wrong with Love Island and that my favourite couple wins! How about you? Who is your favourite? Let me know!?
Sometimes, in families, things go wrong too and it was my pleasure to talk about family therapy for a number of different news outlets this week. It was inspired by Jessica Alba having accessed family therapy with her daughters. I worked in a systemic family therapy service for 6 months and it was lovely to reflect on this experience as I spoke to the journalist.?You can read the article?here.?
