Weekly Nugget: Great Followership

We often speak about leadership and what it takes to be a great leader. We have theories, and books, and resources to help upcoming leaders be better leaders. But do we ever stop and think, for every leader there needs to be several followers?

Followership is as important as leadership. You can't have a leader with no followers. There's no execution of what needs to happen, if you don't have the whole team there.? Recently, in one of my EOS? sessions, ?I became aware of this one group where the dynamic was really optimal. The leader is a strong leader, he's a caring leader, and he's constantly turning to the people and the team. And 90% of the people and the team are great followers. They're there to improve themselves, they support the leader in everything he plans. They speak their minds, they're open and honest, and they're always working to take the company forward.?

To me, that is incredibly important, because we can't always just lead.

We have to follow more than we can lead. Leadership is a privilege and an honor and a responsibility. Followership is equally important.

We need to be, sometimes, members of the team, executing where the leaders are taking us, and sometimes we need to lead, and show the way and take people to a certain place.?

So I'm asking you today, where are you in a leadership position, and are you doing your best to improve all the time? And where are you in a followership position, and are you doing your best to improve all the time, and supporting your leader and taking that process forward?
