CONSTANT SPORTS PODCAST?WEEK IN REVIEW

Recent Interview: Jake Whiting Marketing Manager - OGIO

"Always learning and teaching yourself new skills can add value to potential employers down the road without you even realizing their importance."

?The Constant Sports Podcast was fortunate enough to be joined by Jake Whiting, a Marketing Manager for OGIO, for this week's episode. Jake gave the listeners great insight into how to get your first job in the sports industry and what you can do to make yourself stand out.

Jake explained that one of the most important things he mastered early on in his career was how to persevere through the "no's". After being denied the Georgetown Sports Management program his first time applying, rather than getting down on himself Jake worked hard to boost his resume with hopes of being accepted the next time he applied. This included working at Reebok and Fenway Sports Management, and it allowed him to separate himself from other applicants the second time he applied, resulting in an acceptance to the program.

Prior to attending Georgetown, Jake received his first job in sports at Fenway Sports Management. He explained that he received this opportunity from connections that helped moved his resume to the top of the pile. Still, he then showcased his skills and displayed how he could add value to the organization in order to secure the opportunity. As Jake explained, "Connections can only get you so far... always learning and teaching yourself new skills can add value to potential employers down the road without you even realizing their importance." Jake's added value came in the form of photography after teaching himself the skill, and after noticing that OGIO didn't have a full-time photographer for marketing and product photoshoots, Jake was able to step in and fill the void.

Over the last two years at OGIO, Jake has really enjoyed wearing multiple different hats as a Marketing Manager, and he has also been able to hone in on his photography skills. He created his own photography business, Fifth Edition Photography, and any interested clients can find all useful information at?www.fiftheditionphotography.com.

NBA All-Star Game to Incorporate Live Draft Format

The NBA has used many tactics in the past to keep the All-Star Game interesting to fans. They've gone from East vs West to team captains, to a target score in the fourth quarter, and they recently announced that for this year's game in Salt Lake City, the team captains will draft their teams directly before tip-off in front of fans and on national television. This adds an exciting dimension to the game, as players won't know who they're playing with or against until right before the game begins. This is an effort by the league to keep the All-Star game exciting for fans, as they hope many people will be tuned in across the globe to watch the first-ever live draft.

USMNT General Manager "Moving On" Amid Berhalter Investigation

Brian McBride, General Manager for the United States Mens National Team, has "decided to move on" after three years in the position. This decision comes at an interesting time as manager Gregg Berhalter's future with the team is uncertain due to an ongoing investigation stemming from a 1991 domestic violence incident. Along with McBride, sporting director Earnie Stewart is leaving his role and returning to the Netherlands. After losing in the round of 16 in last month's World Cup, nothing but negative stories have been coming out of the USMNT camp as they now begin their search for a new General Manager.

PGA Documentary "FULL SWING" To Debut on Netflix in February

The PGA Tour and Netflix recently announced the debut of "FULL SWING", a documentary series following professional golfers on and off the course throughout the 2022 PGA Tour season. This series was developed by the same producers of the Formula 1 show Drive to Survive, as they attempt to showcase sports outside of the "Major Four" in a new and exciting way. Drive to Survive was a massive hit and helped aid the increasing popularity of Formula 1, and the PGA is hoping it sees a similar result from the FULL SWING documentary.
