To support the steady growth back to face to face events and exhibitions SMI is delighted announce a new team member.? Amelia Boyd , in the Events Coordinator role, will support the SMI Directors and the busy event programme.?Amelia graduated from King's College London with a BA in War Studies and History and has over 4 years events management experience in the hospitality sector.?On top of her day job Amelia is also completing an MA in Strategic Studies, where her dissertation focuses on the future of Arctic shipping and the impacts it may have on the UK's defence and security.

Marine Science and Technology Person of the Year

Our Biennial Marine Science and Technology Person of the Year award is back for 2023! Nominations are now invited by completion of?this form?to be received no later than 28th?February 2023.

The Business Person of the Year Award recognises individuals who demonstrate outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, strategic business thinking and are regarded as leaders in their field. This Award also acknowledges and celebrates the personal and generous contributions by a Business Person and the difference their involvement makes to the Marine Science & Technology (MST) community overall. Applications for the FREIGHT INNOVATION FUND ACCELERATOR are open until 5th February

The Freight Innovation Fund is a multi-faceted programme, funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and delivered by Connected Places Catapult , which will accelerate the adoption of commercially ready solutions into the sector.?DfT and Connected Places Catapult will select up to 12 SMEs to join a 6-month programme, where they will each have the opportunity to access up to £150,000 of funding to trial their solutions.

ICE Introduces its Thames Class O?shore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Design

ICE Marine Design Group has, for many years, provided navy and coast guard ship design for clients in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Romania, Thailand, the UK, and the US. Based on extensive experience from both commercial and naval shipyards around the world, ICE has recently developed a proprietary OPV design named the Thames Class.

Maritime Leaders Forum - Session 2

On Monday 22 November, Maritime UK and Trinity House held the first of four events in the Maritime Leaders Forum series. The first session saw Michael Parker, Global Head of Shipping at Citi, set the global and national context for decarbonisation. The forum then considered what industry would wish to see in the government's Clean Maritime Plan refresh, which is due to be published next year. For colleagues that missed the session, a recording can be accessed using the link below.

The next session will be held on Monday 13 February and will feature Dr Iain Percy , CEO of Artemis Technologies Ltd , who will speak about how businesses can successfully build consortia to accelerate progress.

£1.6bn MoD contract for Royal Navy support ships awarded to Team Resolute

A £1.6 billion contract has been awarded to Team Resolute to manufacture the vessels providing munitions, stores and provisions to the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers, destroyers and frigates.

?Creating 1,200 UK shipyard jobs, hundreds of graduate and apprentice opportunities, and an expected 800 further jobs across the UK supply chain, Team Resolute, comprising BMT , Harland & Wolff and Navantia UK , will deliver three Fleet Solid Support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA).
