WEEKLY NEWS ROUND UP
Welcome to our Weekly News Round Up of interesting news in the hydrogen space!
Here are our top 5 news pieces for this week with key takeaways:
1. NEOM get first set of wind turbines for mega green hydrogen plant
-
NEOM
Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), the company that is building the world’s largest #greenhydrogen plant, has announced that it has received the first delivery of #windturbines at the Port of NEOM in northwest Saudi Arabia ??
- The first set of wind turbines was successfully delivered on October 8, and are now being transported via road to the Wind Garden site near Gulf of Aqaba where they will be assembled and installed ??
- According to NGHC, additional turbines are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, with its Wind Garden ultimately featuring more than 250 to directly power the green hydrogen plant via a dedicated #electricity transmission grid ?
- NGHC’s facility, located in Oxagon – NEOM’s reimagined industrial city, will integrate as much as 4 giga-watts of #solar and wind #energy to produce up to 600 tonnes of #carbonfree hydrogen daily. Once the plant at NEOM is fully operational in 2026, 100% of the green hydrogen produced will be available for global export in the form of #greenammonia, through an exclusive long-term agreement with
空气化工产品公司
??
- CEO
David Edmondson
said "We continue to make great progress since achieving financial close earlier this year and are on track to start exporting green hydrogen in 2026. It is a major #milestone in NGHC’s journey to becoming a leader in green hydrogen and a major step forward in Saudi Arabia and the wider region’s energy transition," ??
2. World’s first ammonia-fuelled container ship to launch by 2026
- Efforts are on in Norway to build the world’s first ammonia-powered #containership, which is expected to enter service by 2026. Yara Eyde will travel between Oslo, Brevik, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven and is optimized for the commercial corridor between Norway and Europe ??
- The project is being commissioned by Norwegian #ammonia manufacturer
Yara International
's subsidiary Yara Clean Energy in collaboration with #maritime logistics firm
North Sea Container Line
. The vessel will be operated by NCL Oslo, a firm formed as part of the new cooperation between the firms ??
- "The #green journey started with the Yara Birkeland, the world's first self-driving electric container ship, and now we continue it with the Yara Eyde, which will be the world's first container ship on pure ammonia," says
Svein Tore Holsether
, CEO of Yara International, in a statement ??
- With Yara Eyde, the firms intend to demonstrate the maturity of ammonia as a maritime fuel. “Ammonia as a fuel does not pollute. When we produce ammonia from #renewable energy or with natural gas where up to 95 percent of the CO2 emissions are captured and stored permanently, pure ammonia will quickly be a good solution for cutting #carbonemissions in the maritime sector," said
Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand
, head of Yara Clean Ammonia, in a statement ??
- Yara will supply Yara Eyde with ammonia that is produced #fossilfree or almost carbon-free ??
3. Ceres Power passes major milestone in green hydrogen program
-
Ceres
says its first-of-a-kind solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) demonstrator is producing #hydrogen and will be ready in the coming weeks to be sent to
壳牌
’s R&D centre in India ??
- The technology employed by Ceres differentiates itself by utilising solid dioxide technology to split steam, rather than water, operating at higher temperatures. This approach results in a much higher #thermodynamic efficiency, providing a 25% boost in efficiency, particularly in industrial settings with waste heat. The efficiency gains are economically advantageous in the production of green hydrogen, as the cost of energy is a primary cost factor for #electrolysers ?
- This innovative technology is well-suited for industrial applications, specifically those with access to waste heat, such as #fertiliser production, ammonia synthesis, chemical processes, and steel manufacturing ??
4. Green hydrogen roadmap finalised | Uruguay plans to produce 1GW of H2 by 2030 for as little as $1.20/kg
- Uruguay has finally unveiled its national green hydrogen #roadmap, with the aim to create a $1.9bn industry by 2040, largely via exports of #renewable H2 and its derivatives ??
- Uruguay has already largely #decarbonised its power system, reaching 94% renewable energy in 2016-22, and believes it can harness its natural resources to build a globally #competitive green hydrogen industry ??
- “The quality, abundance and complementarity of the country’s wind and solar resources would allow the #energytransition process to continue [beyond decarbonising the power sector], achieving competitive costs in the production of hydrogen at scale. By 2030, green hydrogen production costs could reach $1.2-1.4/kg, with a potential for installing renewable energies greater than 90GW of power in the sites with the best wind and solar resources of wind and solar.” the document states ?
- The roadmap envisages domestic demand for green hydrogen of 3GW by 2040 — for the use in heavy-duty trucks, buses and tractors, with derivatives used as #shipping and land-based fuels, and also in the production of #fertiliser ??
- If the goals are achieved, by 2040 the new green hydrogen industry would add $1.9bn annually to the national #economy — roughly 2% of the country’s future GDP; the creation of more than 30,000 jobs; a decreased dependence on imported fossil fuels; and the decarbonisation of “other industrial sectors” ??
5. Air Products launches commercial hydrogen refuelling station in China
-
空气化工产品公司
and Chinese state-owned industry group
诚志股份有限公司
have, through a joint venture, launched a commercial-scale hydrogen #refuelling station in Changshu city, Jiangsu province, to fuel city buses and heavy-duty trucks ??
- Under the service contracts, the station will refuel hydrogen trucks from various multinational and domestic companies including
Budweiser Brewing Company APAC
, Um China,
雀巢
China and
京东物流
to trial zero-emission #logistics operations ??
- Included among the vehicles to benefit from the refuelling station, is a 49-tonne heavy-duty #fuelcell truck operated by Budweiser running between Nantong and Suzhou in east China which recently recorded over 10,000km ??
- Wei Junmin, President of Chengzhi, explained the Changshu station has been operational for several months, fuelling public transport and truck fleets. “Chengzhi shares Air Products’ commitment to China’s #netzero transition and is pleased to extend our long-term partnership to support green transportation by leveraging the strengths of both companies,” Junmim said ??
