WEEKLY NEWS ROUND UP
Welcome to our Weekly News Round Up of interesting articles in the sustainability space!?
Here are our top 5 news pieces for this week with key takeaways:
1. Hydrogen agriculture is finally a reality in United States: this is what the crops of the future will be like
- Over the past few years, the United States has made great strides in the pursuit of new #renewable energies. The latest has been the invention of hydrogen #agriculture, the fusion of the oldest human activity and one of the most renewable fuels we have ??
- Hydrogen agriculture is an emerging trend in #sustainable farming that utilizes #hydrogen gas and fuel cell technologies to power various agricultural processes. As concerns grow over the environmental impacts of conventional agriculture, hydrogen offers a cleaner and greener way to grow crops and raise livestock ??
- Hydrogen #fuelcell tractors generate electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This powers an electric motor, allowing the tractor to operate without any direct emissions. The only byproducts are electricity, water and heat. Major tractor manufacturers like
约翰迪尔
have developed hydrogen tractor prototypes. Hydrogen tractors also don’t contaminate the soil and #crops. They operate much quieter than diesel tractors, which is better for farm workers and animals ??
- Fertilizers created through green hydrogen production are emerging as a promising tool for sustainable agriculture. These #renewablehydrogen fertilizers can provide the same crop #nutrition as traditional fertilizers, without fossil fuel consumption or greenhouse gas #emissions. The hydrogen reacts with nitrogen to form ammonia, which plants can absorb for growth. #Greenammonia fertilizers made with hydrogen will be critical for #decarbonizing agriculture. As the world’s population grows, fertilizer is needed to improve crop yields ??
- Shifting to renewable hydrogen will allow farmers to boost production and nutrition in a carbon-free way. Several companies are building facilities to manufacture hydrogen #fertilizers at scale for agriculture ??
2. Hydrogen power hits the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
- Ahead of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris,
液空
has deployed a hydrogen #refuelling station to support the official hydrogen-powered fleet. Located at Place de l’Alma in the city centre, the station will enable refuelling times of about five minutes for a range of up to 650km ?
- The event’s official fleet includes 500 hydrogen-powered
Toyota Motor Corporation
Mirai cars. Both Toyota and Air Liquide have previously partnered to showcase hydrogen mobility during Nuit Blanche, offering free public #hydrogen shuttles around Paris ??
- The station received funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership as part of the H2ME2 programme. The public-private #partnership is supported by the EU Horizon’s 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research ??
- Earlier this year (2024), Air Liquide and
TotalEnergies
launched their equally owned hydrogen refuelling business,
TEAL Mobility
??
3. Kimberly-Clark seeks to go green with new hydrogen hub
- Kimberly-Clark seeks to go green with new #hydrogen hub as a test bed to decarbonise its operation across the world ??
-
金佰利
, which employs around 350 people at its factory in Barrow, signed an agreement with
Carlton Power Limited
, based in Stokesley, near Middlesbrough, in 2022 to develop a green hydrogen scheme on land opposite its site on the A590 ??
- It is hoped to be in operation by early 2026, with the #project successfully passing Round One of the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round in December. This means the project has been awarded a financial contract from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. The £40m scheme would be the first of its kind in the county and part of Kimberly-Clark’s wider mission to reduce its reliance on #fossilfuels at sites across the world ??
- The project will initially use a 30MW #electrolyser, expected to produce approximately 3,000 tonnes of hydrogen every year. Most of this will be used by Kimberly-Clark in Barrow, its largest UK site, which makes products including Andrex and Kleenex ??
4. Hydrogen-powered farming and construction vehicles set to be rolled out in the UK
- The UK Government has launched new regulations that will see farming and #construction vehicles switch to hydrogen ??
- As part of the government’s scheme to support building sites and #agricultural businesses go greener, hydrogen-powered tractors, diggers and forklifts will be used on roads in the UK. The consultation will run for four weeks up until April 24, 2024 ??
- Anthony Browne, Technology and Decarbonisation Minister, claimed the use of hydrogen-powered #farming and construction vehicles is a “common-sense move to help reduce #emissions. These proposals are an important part of our plan to #decarbonise transport in the UK, with skilled jobs in British companies helping roll out this cutting-edge hydrogen technology, making it more affordable and commonplace” ??
5. 24 Hours Of Le Mans 2024: Hydrogen Prototypes On Track Saturday June 15
- A world premiere will take place on Saturday June 15, 2024 during the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans: the H24, MissionH24’s hydrogen #racing prototype, will be on track a few hours before the start of the 92nd edition, as it has already done been able to achieve it in recent years, but in 2024 it will not be alone since several other hydrogen #prototypes will accompany it for this pioneering demonstration. Proof that MissionH24, the collaborative program between the ACO and H24Project, is concretely pursuing its objectives ??
- MissionH24 helps promote #hydrogen in competition, with the aim of creating an H2 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the FIA World Endurance Championship ??
- This demonstration run of hydrogen prototypes demonstrates the commitment of #manufacturers ready to join this new category, the future of endurance after the formidable era of the current hypercar ??
- Between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., on the main 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit, several hydrogen competition prototypes, using #fuelcells and hydrogen combustion engines, will evolve at a sustained pace. The #zeroemission competition will thus be presented to hundreds of thousands of spectators and television viewers ??
