WEEKLY NEWS ROUND UP
Welcome to our Weekly News Round Up of news in the hydrogen space!
Here are our top 5 news pieces for this week with key takeaways:
1. Porsche inks deal to buy thousands of tonnes of green hydrogen-derived steel from H2 Green Steel
-
Porsche AG
has signed an agreement to buy #greenhydrogen-derived steel from Swedish pioneer
Stegra
—accounting for up to 15% of all the iconic car maker’s steel demand ??
- The terms of the deal will see H2 Green Steel supply up to 35,000 tonnes per year of low-emissions #greensteel to Porsche from 2026 ?
- The product will be made using renewable H2 to chemically alter iron ore to produce direct-reduced iron (DRI). The DRI would then be smelted into steel at the plant’s #renewable energy-powered electric arc furnace, reducing the whole process emissions by up to 95% compared to using coke-fired blast furnaces ??
- “Energy, processes and materials account for a significant share of CO2 emissions in the supply chain,” said
Barbara Frenkel
, executive board member for procurement at Porsche. “That is why we want to increase the use of recycled materials and green electricity in the production processes of direct suppliers as part of our #decarbonisation efforts.” ??
2. UK-based Protium announces European hydrogen expansion
- UK-based green hydrogen company
Protium
has marked its first international expansion, launching its Dutch-headquartered European business ??
- Planned to aid the development of renewables and installation of #electrolysers and infrastructure necessary to see green hydrogen used in industrial and transport applications, the European arm will be headed up by Protium’s Chief Operating Officer,
Jack Eastwood
??
- “Europe has strongly committed to supporting green hydrogen but still has a shortage of available gas to allow companies to achieve their #NetZero targets,” Eastwood said. “We can bring our experience deploying assets and supplying green hydrogen to our customers to accelerate the #transition.” ??
- 2023 has been a year of firsts for the company, having produced the first kilogrammes of hydrogen from its Pioneer One site in Wales this May (2023) – which has fuelled bus operates in the region. In October 2023, the company announced plans with Haskel and
Nel Hydrogen
to accelerate the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft at UK airports and said it would be heading up a UK-funded project to put 30 hydrogen-fuelled trucks on the road ??
3. Enersense’s associated company P2X agrees to deliver green hydrogen to Danisco Sweeteners
-
P2X Solutions Oy
has agreed to deliver green hydrogen to Danisco Sweeteners, part of
INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES I.F.F.
(IFF). Green hydrogen will be used at Danisco’s plant in Kotka in xylitol production in which xylose and #hydrogen are always required, among others. Danisco produces xylitol at its Kotka plant under the brand name XIVIA ??
- Work under the equipment and pipeline contract signed by
Enersense International Oyj
with P2X last summer started in July 2023. In addition to the equipment and pipeline installation, Enersense will deliver some 70,000 kg of steel structures to the #production plant ??
4. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Tenaska to develop green hydrogen projects in the US
-
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners
(CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund I (CI ETF I), the largest dedicated #cleanhydrogen fund globally, and
Tenaska
further strengthen their relationship by entering into an agreement to ramp up development of gigawatt-scale green hydrogen projects in the U.S. ??
- As part of the agreement, Tenaska and CIP will develop #greenfield gigawatt-scale green hydrogen projects, with the intent of serving local and #global demand for green hydrogen, #ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel and other clean fuels in key U.S. hydrogen markets ?
-
Joel Link
, President of Tenaska Development, said: “Green hydrogen presents exciting opportunities for the energy, transportation and #agricultural sectors, among others, to meet #climate and decarbonisation goals. Tenaska looks forward to working with local and international consumers of hydrogen to create the right solutions for their #cleanenergy needs and collaborating with CIP to deliver such hydrogen solutions and advance significant infrastructure projects throughout the U.S.” ??
5. Cheaper green hydrogen energy in the pipeline – Malaysia
- The Malaysian government expects green hydrogen energy to be a valuable new commodity and aims to make it affordable for the local market, at a price of 15 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh) within five years, through various initiatives and partnerships with the private sector ??
- Malaysia’s green hydrogen market is expected to grow to US$3.1 billion (RM14.73 billion) by 2050, as projected by the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) ??
-
Chang Lih Kang
, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, said: “Malaysia is determined to become a leading hydrogen economy nation by 2050 and achieve global #decarbonisation targets. If we become a green hydrogen producing nation in the region, (the projections) would be even bigger because we are not only focusing on the Malaysia market, but the whole region…(The hydrogen production cost) now is expensive because the market is not built yet. When you have more users of (hydrogen energy) and the entire ecosystem is complete, then (demand will improve) and the production cost will come down.” ??
