Global Sustainable Sport – Reflections on one year of sustainable sport
One year ago this week Global Sustainable Sport launched its global platform and weekly newsletter, setting out to help improve awareness, knowledge-sharing and education around sport and sustainability, covering all of the latest developments across the globe.
Twelve months on, GSS has published over 110 features, 250 news editorials and 400 hundred plus press releases on all aspects of sport and sustainability, ranging from environmental issues like climate change, to social issues like gender equality, to participation issues like getting kids active through to governance issues like ESG risk.

SailGP’s chief purpose officer Fiona Morgan has said the way to make sportspeople make greener choices is the turn it into a competition. SailGP did just that – it is not just racing on water, but the athletes also compete in the Impact League, which measures the actions made by teams to mitigate their environmental impact. And sitting on the board of cricket’s Manchester Originals, Morgan has said that cricket can also make the same steps towards being more sustainable.?
Cycling’s UAE Team Emirates announced at COP28 that the goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. COP28 is currently taking place in Dubai and will run until December 12. The team is already reported to be the first in professional cycling to reach Carbon Neutrality in 2023. UAE Team Emirates and its riders have been promoting environmental awareness with attempts to educate younger generations about sustainability.
