Weekly Market Review

Weekly Market Review

?Good afternoon,

?

Mike, now that we’re past the holidays and into another election year, what should we be concerned about/worried about/considering?

In short, the usual stuff. 2024 will be my 8th election year cycle and here is what I’ve learned from the past 7. Over multiple years, it doesn’t much matter which team is in power. In the shorter term, some things may be affected, like tax rates, favored or unfavored industries, various regulations and such. But over many years, markets still do what they do. In the longer term, 3-5 years and more, the market bias is up. In individual years, markets will continue to fluctuate due to things we anticipate and things we don’t. Markets tend to drop 10% at least once every year and drop 20-30% at least once every 4-5 years. I would expect that pattern to continue. #mathwins. So vote for your guy, or girl, and implement a disciplined and diversified investment strategy, monitor it a couple of times per year and make changes as necessary. Everything is different, but nothing has changed. Call me for help.

?Disclaimer – Lincoln does not participate in the crypto currency markets nor does it endorse crypto as an investment strategy.?

However, there is some recent news in the industry.

A decade after the first bitcoin exchange traded fund (ETF) applied for SEC approval, it was finally granted. Not unexpectedly, there are now multiple ones to choose from.

Not for nothing but the WMR has been telling you for years that this was an inevitable event. Crypto is real, it’s a thing and it’s not going away. It was only a matter of time before the various regulatory agencies acknowledged it. Even if they did do so against their will. The approval of those investment vehicles does not in any way mean that they are a good idea for investors, or appropriate for you and your circumstances, that should be determined by you and your advisor. But it does make it simpler and easier to get access to that asset class.? The WMR has also been telling you for years, be careful out there in crypto world.

?Recession? Nah, I choose not to participate. So do Rolls Royce customers apparently.

RR sold just north of 6,000 cars in 2023. Which may not sound like much, but was the most in their 120 year history. Just for perspective, RR prices start just under $500,000 and escalate to “if you have to ask you can’t afford it.”

?

Not to be left out, the car enthusiast website BringATrailer.com had record sales last year too.

More than 30,000 cars, and most, but not all, more affordable than a new Rolls. Speaking as a car guy, this is a fun site to explore, https://bringatrailer.com/

?

Also for your envious pleasure, here are the priciest zip codes in America, according to the Robb Report. Rated by the cost of homes? https://robbreport.com/shelter/homes-for-sale/most-expensive-us-zip-codes-1234900514/

With all due respect to my many realtor friends, while a home is a substantial investment, it isn’t always a great one. Neither is a car, for that matter. Of course you do need someplace to live, but when you consider the costs of owning, property taxes, mortgage interest, insurance, maintenance, utilities, repairs, etc., it isn’t always as great of an investment as it is portrayed.

?

?I only include this headline b/c it made me chuckle, “Pro pickleball players band together as chaos, a merger and pay cuts grip the sport.” Pickleball chaos? Oh no, whatever shall we do? With all the other crises in the world, now is not the time for upheaval in pickleball, I demand that something be done! Now!

?Last week’s in person comedian was one of the original Kings of Comedy. Cedric The Entertainer was in town performing at the Sound Board in the Motor City Casino. I liked the smallish, intimate, 1,500 seat venue. A consummate professional performer for almost 40 years, Cedric is a comedian, actor, producer and TV host. TBH though, I didn’t enjoy his live show as much as I was anticipating. I really enjoyed his 2016 Netflix special, “Live From The Ville.” He was funny in person, as were his duo of opening acts, but it just wasn’t as good as I expected. In fact, his opening acts, Malik S. and J.J. Williamson, in some opinions, were funnier. Ced wasn’t necessarily bad, I guess I had the bar set too high. One of my favorite bits from that special is when he says he needs closed captions to understand his southern cousins. Look that one up for a laugh.

?

And finally, here is your friendly reminder that my half hour virtual office hour is back on this Friday. Hop on at noon and ask me anything.

Michael Acho is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

This week’s chuckle might be a repeat, I don’t remember, but it’s worth it since I mentioned cars above. 3 minutes of Sebastian Maniscalco at the auto body shop,
