Weekly Market Review

?Good afternoon,

?

Bit of a somber, but simultaneously uplifting, note to start this week. It’s been about 18 months since my sister Jackie passed after her battle with ovarian cancer. My brother in law John just published her second book, “Cancer Culture: Fixing the Landscape by Infusing Empathy.” She wrote it to help others with cancer and their families. Get your copy here, https://a.co/d/gpshYMu? Thanks to those who check it out.

And John, thanks for everything you’ve done and continue to do.

“Midyear outlook”

Is the title of many emails I’ve been receiving lately. Midyear already? Wow, where does the time go? I’ve heard good things about the book titled “Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management For Mortals” but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I probably should considering I’m in week 3,000 ish. I’ve also done the math via life expectancy and I’m on the back nine of my life, 12th fairway to be more specific. I’m not at the green yet, but I’m in the landing area preparing for my approach shot. #mathwins. Time to get busy doing whatever it is I need to do. Where are you at?

“Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.” – Leonardo da Vinci.

BTW, a midyear outlook, or midyear review, or whatever is no more valuable than the year end reviews and/or next year outlooks that I ignore in December. So don’t waste your time with them.

?On the heels of my artificial intelligence message last week,

?

Joe Rogan had a guest on his podcast recently who makes the case that we are living in a simulation. Oh boy. I don’t know if he’s right, but IMO, the probability might be low, but it’s not zero. Elon Musk has made that argument as well. #mathwins. He goes on to suggest that the simulation theory lines up nicely with the philosophy of most major religions. If we’re living this life according to a set of rules, that if followed, will move us successfully to the next life, doesn’t that make this life a simulation? I’ll leave that to my readers to decide. Either way, my takeaway is do not just be an NPC (non-player character) in your own life. I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with the various guests that Joe speaks with, but he sure does make you think.

?And speaking of time moving us through life, let’s remember that we aren’t on this journey alone. I’m not only talking about family and friends in this case but other resources. Just speaking for myself, but there are many people upon whom I rely for various expertise. I know what I know and defer to other experts for things I don’t/can’t do on my own.? Put another way, “I’ve got a guy…”

I consider them my “Strategic Partners” and defer to them when I, or clients, or friends need help with things beyond their own skills/knowledge/abilities. It might be a simple question via text or it could be help with a larger project. It’s good to know that I have reliable resources to call upon when necessary.

?My daughter and I took a road trip last weekend. We drove, more accurately I drove, from the D to North Carolina, where she’ll live on the campus of N.C. State (Go Wolfpack!) while she works as a summer intern for a marketing company. With a couple of stops, it took us about 11 hours, but was a fairly easy ride through Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and finally North Carolina. Miles of tree covered mountains and several podcasts later, we stopped at a Waffle House. Not because we wanted to, but because if you’re on a road trip, stopping at a Waffle House is mandatory. I think it’s a law. We sat at the counter, of course, and happened to catch them during a shift change. There were 10 WH employees and us. That’s it. We ordered some eggs and a sandwich, neither of which were noteworthy, paid our $24 and left. “That wasn’t so great,” she comments as we get back on the road.

You’re right. But now you have a story for the rest of your life that “my dad made us stop at a Waffle House and it was terrible!”

Quality time for sure. You’re welcome.

?

You know I can’t mention a road trip without providing at least a bit of a soundtrack.

?While in N.C., my daughter is helping to sell drugs. Sort of. The marketing firm she’s working for has some pharmaceutical companies for clients. She just started there, but her role is to assist one of those companies with the marketing of one of their drugs.

“So I read all about the drug in order to be familiar with it.” She told me.

Good idea.

“The list of potential side effects sounds terrible.”

Yep, they usually do.

“I’m going to suggest this slogan for an ad, ‘If you take this, it’s possible you could die, but at least you won’t be itchy.’”

I like it.

?This week’s comedian review is Brian Simpson, “Live From The Mothership” on Netflix. The Mothership is Joe Rogan’s comedy club in Austin, TX. I visited there when I was in Austin early last year. In fact, Brian Simpson was one of the comedians who performed on the night I happened to be there. The others were Tony Hinchcliffe and Joe Rogan. Anyway, back to Brian’s new special. How’s this for a review, it was fine. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it. There were a few entertaining bits that resulted in some chuckles, but not any big laughs. It’s not that I actively disliked the show, but his style just wasn’t for me. He lives in Austin so if you ever visit the Mothership, you might see him perform. He’s also scheduled to come out this way later this summer. For a reasonable price, I’d see him again, but it’s not a high priority.

As summer approaches, this week’s public service announcement is a primer in how to cook the perfect burger. Some tips from one of my local markets.
