Good afternoon,

?

Mike, are you watching the news?? The world is on FIRE! Devastating hurricanes in North Carolina and Florida, missiles flying in the middle east, war in Ukraine, they’re looting CVS’s in CA, a nationwide strike at several ports, election mayhem at home, astronauts are stuck in space, and so much more! What do you have to say about all this mess??

?“We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning, since the world’s been turning.” – Billy Joel.

?No comment from me other than this feels like déjà vu all over again. When has the world not been on fire? And what can I or should I be doing about it?

“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius.

PSA #1 this week, October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Cyber_Security_Awareness_Month

Be careful out there on the interwebs. And be careful with unsolicited emails/calls/text messages. Don’t click anything you don’t recognize. Just my opinion, but vigilance in cyberland is going to become ever more important as artificial intelligence becomes more common.

?Here are some cyber security tips from your friendly neighborhood big government brother on how to stay safe online.

https://www.cisa.gov/topics/cybersecurity-best-practices

Thanks Mike, but isn’t that the same government that would love to implement a CBDC (central bank digital currency) that would keep track of pretty much everything you do? And then have the ability to allow or disallow things they might disagree with? Seem hypocritical of them, doesn’t it?

Why yes, yes it does. Be careful whom you trust.

PSA #2, October is also National Pizza Month.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Pizza_Month

Which is far more tasty. If you aren’t already familiar with Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports and his pizza review videos, look him up. He’s been reviewing pizza places since 2013 and has enough clout now that his reviews can make or break a pizza joint. His preferred style is that of New Haven, CT. I prefer Chicago style. His reviews are short and usually pretty entertaining.

?I visited Florida for a few days last week and in a nutshell, it wasn’t great. Normally I love FL, but I usually visit the southeast coast, Miami area. This time was Orlando, which, BTW, is second only to Las Vegas for having the most hotel rooms in the U.S. In case you haven’t heard, there was a hurricane heading for central FL last weekend, which makes for inclement weather. It rained the bulk of my 3 day stay. While there, and against my will, a group of us visited SeaWorld for some Halloween festivities. A. I’m not a fan of Halloween, or the associated festivities, B. I feel about SeaWorld similar to how I feel about zoos, they’re animal prisons and I don’t care for that, and C. It was raining. So we walked from unpleasant event to unpleasant event, at night, in a venue I didn’t want to be at, in the rain. Not to overly complain, but I’ve had better trips. Oh, and then there was this sign not far from where I was walking alongside a pond.? Oh, and my flight home was delayed several hours because of the weather. I could have, but chose not to, visit one of the various exorbitantly priced theme parks in the area, in the rain.? Good times.

?

Joking aside, if you’re one of the WMR family in FL, please take whatever precautions you deem necessary.

Speaking of snakes, here is 2 minutes of vintage Nate Bargatze. He got some questionable snake advice.

?Not a comedian review this week, but rather an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary titled “Catholics vs. Convicts” which is about the October 1988 football game between the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the University of Miami Hurricanes. Most readers know that I’m a Domer, having earned a graduate degree from Notre Dame. This game took place about 6 months before I got there so I remember it and was therefore interested in watching this doc. To put it mildly, there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes, some of them years in the making, that lead to the significance of that game. Notre Dame went on to win the national championship that season. The film has interviews with players and coaches, game highlights and of course the story of how the “Catholics vs Convicts” tee shirt came about. I enjoyed the film and afterward found myself wanting to head back to South Bend for a game. If you have any affinity for ND and/or just enjoy sports documentaries, this is worth the watch.

?Bonus review is a movie that I watched on my delayed flight home from FL, The Beekeeper, with Jason Statham. I consider myself a Statham fan. I’ve enjoyed some of his previous work. Good stuff if you like mindless action and good guys winning. Who doesn’t? This movie was his regular formula. Him alone versus a whole bunch of bad guys in order to take down a corrupt relative of the POTUS who had tricked an elderly friend out of her life savings. Lots of action with fists and guns and so forth. Standard fare for a Statham movie, but, IMO, it’s not a must see. Kind of like John Wick, it was pretty ridiculous. For example, in one scene he defeated a gaggle of heavily armed, and presumably highly trained, FBI agents so he could get into a building in order to defeat another gaggle of heavily armed and presumably highly trained private army of bad guys. I chose this movie because it seemed like the best choice of films I hadn’t yet already seen. If not for that, I wouldn’t bother with this movie.

I like to provide reviews in the WMR, so this week’s chuckle is young comedian I recently discovered, Josh Johnson. He found a Yelp review of the Cook County Jail.
