Weekly Market Review

?Good afternoon,

?

?“Mike, I’m pretty scared!”

What do you mean? Halloween got you on edge? Have you watched too many scary movies?

“No! I’m scared about what happens next week! What if my team doesn’t win? The other team is going to end the world as we know it!”

Ah ha, I understand. I feel your pain. Uncertainty can cause apprehension. The unknown can cause fear. What if this? Or What if that? Especially when it seems like everyone everywhere has been shouting at us for months, or even years, that those awful people on the other side who don’t agree with me are going to screw everything up.

“Exactly! What are we going to do about it?”

?

First, breathe. In through the nose for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Repeat 5 times.

Good.

Now let’s get some perspective. The world is not going to end. Ever. *disclaimer: not anytime soon, but in a few billion years when the Sun explodes, our world will end, not before that.

Everything is different, but nothing has changed.

?

Here at WMR headquarters, we do data, not narrative.

Feelings matter, but #mathwins.

We might adjust our shorter term investment decisions based on Washington goings on, but we won’t change our longer term strategies unless things change in YOUR goings on.

If you want to get wealthier, you still have to spend less than you earn and invest the difference.

YOU still have to determine when you want to retire.

YOU still have to determine how much income you’ll need.

WE still have to determine how you’re going to get there.

Schedule some time with me using my link below if you’re still scared and you’d like to talk about it.

?

Now feels like a good time to include a few stoic ideas.

“We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” – Seneca.

“We cannot control the external events around us, but we can control our reactions to them.” – Epictetus.

“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this and you will find strength.” – Marcus Aurelius.

?

While we’re at it, and since the market is making all-time highs, we should discuss some portfolio protection ideas.

Warren Buffett would agree.

?

?

?Please indulge me for a brief WMR public service announcement. I have a gotten a few introductions lately to friends of friends and I’m happy to help.

?

One couple introduced me to one of their adult children who is out working in the world and had some questions about retirement plans.

One of my banker friends introduced me to a more seasoned couple who have some questions about generating income with the resources they’ve accumulated.

And finally, one of my neighbors introduced me to a friend of hers who owns a very successful small business and has some planning questions.

All good discussions.

?

As a service to my WMR readers, if you have friends/family/colleagues who might have investment/financial questions, I’m available for an introduction and a chat. As always, the chats are confidential, complimentary and brief.? Thank you for your consideration.

?PSA #2 this week. It’s ok to order your quarter pounders again. McDonald’s e-coli scare is over. That burger looks tasty, doesn’t it?

https://cnb.cx/3YKVBG0

Everyone I ask says something along the lines of “Oh man, I haven’t been to Mickey D’s in forever.” Which can’t be true because they have almost 42,000 restaurants around the world. Somebody, or more like lots of somebodys, are buying lots of quarter pounders.

?

Q. What do they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris?

A. A royale with cheese.

Q. Why?

A. Because of the metric system.

Q. What do they call a Big Mac?

A. Big Mac is still a Big Mac, but they call it Le Big Mac.

Q. What do they call a Whopper?

A. I don’t know, I didn’t go to Burger King.

?The most popular podcaster in the world, Joe Rogan, had a rather high profile guest on last week. Without naming names, you probably heard about it. That episode got 26 million views in the first 24 hours after release. Wow. The JRE has recorded north of 2,200 episodes and while I haven’t listened to them all, I’ve probably listened to most of them.

Here’s a dilemma I’m facing. Although, as a good friend of mine would phrase it, “a champagne problem.”

Comedian Dave Chappelle just announced an upcoming show in Detroit. I’ve seen Chappelle and he’s great, so I’d for sure see him again. However, it’s the same night as the Mike Tyson v. Jake Paul fight live on Netflix. Was planning to watch that fight with some buddies from the cigar room. Chappelle tickets are pricey. I already pay for Netflix, so the fight won’t cost anything more. Now I have a decision to make…

?This week’s comedian review is Brad Williams special from several years ago titled “Fun Size.” For those who aren’t familiar with Brad, he’s a very funny little person comedian. Little person, dwarf, midget, pick your description. He employs them all throughout the special. And it’s funny. Mostly adult topics and adult content, and funny. Lots of stuff that could only happen to him because he’s a midget. In fact, when describing how he writes his jokes, he states, “A. Be a dwarf. B. Wait…” With more than a few LOL bits, I liked this special, even though it was recorded all the way back in 2015. If you’re not offended by self-deprecating midget stories, you’ll enjoy this.

?

?And if you liked “Fun Size,” which I did, you’ll enjoy his latest YouTube effort, “Starfish.” Which I also liked. More funny little person stories. That seems to be an endless well of material and Brad does a great job bringing them to life. Definitely for mature audiences, but I recommend checking him out.

?

This week’s chuckle is Brad Williams getting away with stuff,

Safe for work.
