As a Past President of the?International Association for the Study of Pain?(IASP) I am pleased to provide weekly updates on the most recent activities within the field.
In the following, I draw your attention to the wealth of activities and resources that IASP offers the global pain community.
IASP News - This Week:
Apply for IASP Early Career Research Grants!
IASP Early Career Research Grants are available internationally, open to any discipline, and help facilitate the development of researchers starting their careers as independent investigators. Selected grantees will receive awards of $20,000 USD to complete their projects lasting one year, and applications will be accepted through 10 July 2023. Learn more here!
IASP Journals:
PAIN is an official journal of IASP. Published monthly,?PAIN?presents original research on the nature, mechanisms, and treatment of pain. Take a look at this topical review from the May 2023 issue:
The importance of using placebo controls in nonpharmacological randomised trials. Wartolowska et al. PAIN.?May. 164(5):921-925.
PAIN Reports is an official IASP publication. An online, open access, multidisciplinary journal,?PAIN Reports?promotes a global, rapid, and readily accessible forum that advances clinical, applied, and basic research on pain. ?

IASP Pain Research Forum:
The IASP Pain Research Forum (PRF) is an interactive community of pain researchers working to understand the basic neurobiology of pain and translate new knowledge into novel treatments for chronic pain.?
PRF News: PRF’s professional science journalists cover the latest topics in pain research each and every week for thousands of readers throughout the world.
DID YOU MISS? Flipping the Switch in Visceral Mechanosensation
A new study demonstrates that mechanosensitive Piezo2 channels expressed by TRPV1 neurons make significant contributions to visceral mechanosensitivity.
PRF Papers of the Week: PRF’s weekly review of the scientific literature on pain. This week’s highlighted papers:
Plasticity in ventral pallidal cholinergic neuron-derived circuits contributes to comorbid chronic pain-like and depression-like behaviour in male mice. Ji et al. Nat Commun. 17 April 2023.
The basolateral amygdala-anterior cingulate pathway contributes to depression-like behaviors and comorbidity with chronic pain behaviors in male mice. Becker et al. Nat Commun. 17 April 2023.
Piezo2 regulates colonic mechanical sensitivity in a sex specific manner in mice. Madar et al. Nat Commun. 15 April 2023.
Distinct serum immune profiles define the spectrum of acute and chronic pancreatitis from the multi-center PROCEED study. Lee et al. Gastroenterology. April 2023.
RELIEF
RELIEF?is the?IASP Pain Research Forum’s companion site for patients and the wider public. RELIEF aims to provide anyone touched by or interested in chronic pain with knowledge and information about the latest research?to help them raise awareness of chronic pain, rally support for pain research, and contribute to an international conversation about ways to advance pain treatment and care.
The answer as to why people seek healthcare for certain conditions (while others may not) is likely influenced to a large degree by behavioral features.
