Weekly Fraud Alert: Beware of Fake Helplines – Rs. 4 Lakh Lost in Digital Payment Scam

A new case from Bhubaneswar shows how easily cyber fraudsters exploit innocent mistakes. Usharani Behera lost Rs. 4 lakh when she searched online for a support number, contacted a fake helpline, and fell victim to a refund scam.

?? Scam Breakdown:

While trying to correct a small mistake of recharging the wrong number, Behera searched for PhonePe’s customer support number on Google. Unknowingly, she contacted fraudsters who promised to help her but instead stole Rs. 1 lakh. Later, after reactivating her frozen bank account, another Rs. 3 lakh was looted.

How to Avoid Fake Helpline Scams:

  1. Always Use Verified Sources: Get official helpline numbers only from the app’s website or within the app itself. Avoid searching customer support numbers on Google as it may lead to fake listings.
  2. Stay Cautious with Refund Promises: Scammers often promise quick refunds to gain trust. Avoid giving out sensitive information or banking details over the phone.
  3. Avoid Account Reactivation Risks: After a fraud, avoid reactivating or unfreezing your bank account until you confirm security with your bank’s branch directly. Even after unfreezing, monitor it closely.
  4. Report Suspicious Activities: If you face a suspicious interaction or fraudulent debits, immediately inform your bank and lodge a police complaint. Quick action can sometimes prevent additional losses.

Why Does This Matter?

This incident highlights a common yet preventable mistake—using unverified sources for help. Scammers target people searching for customer support on the internet, where anyone can create fake helplines.
