Lessons From a Burning Forest As a reporter, I’ve experienced the aftermath of several disasters, including dam bursts, landslides and floods. But nothing quite prepared me to witness the extent of the destruction in Canada’s boreal forests that I saw in June, one year after the record-breaking wildfires of 2023. At one point, my colleague Bryan Denton and I drove for an entire hour and saw almost no living trees in the forests we could see from the road. Much of the landscape was covered with blackened stumps of trees that burned last year. Residents told us the burned trees revealed hills, rivers and towns that they had never seen before. The rangers turning the DRC’s ‘triangle of death’ back into a thriving wildlife reserve Ranger Sylvain Musimi had just risen from his morning coffee around the campfire when the rebels opened fire. It was early morning, in the mid-January humidity of Upemba National Park. Sixteen suspected members of the Bakata Katanga militia faces daubed in white war paint, surprised the party of four rangers only 5.5 miles (9km) from Upemba’s base camp. ?Musimi, 50, was shot four times in the thigh but managed to flee into the bush. Reporting confirms alleged Indigenous rights violations in Nepal hydropower project The list of alleged crimes and lies is long: accusations of forging local signatures, signing children’s names on contracts, creating false reports, bulldozing through farmlands under the cover of night and trapping sacred animals. While speaking with Mongabay, Karma Bhutia had dozens of legal documents running through his hands, spilling over his desk, enough to fill a book, all pointing to Sangrila Urja Pvt. Ltd., a Nepali hydropower company. The Chyamtang activist and adviser to the Chyamtang-Kathmandu Welfare Society was exasperated. “They [the company] put price tags on our rivers, our sacred forests and biodiversity and did not even ask what we wanted,” Karma said. “If not for the community’s resistance, we would have lost everything at the hands of government.” Read more...
