2024 on Track to Be the Hottest Year on Record This year is on track to be the warmest on record after the previous high set in 2023, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Two days in July were the hottest days on record in a data set that extends back to 1940. The month was the second-warmest July on record, ending the more than yearlong streak of global monthly temperature records. July was only 0.04 degrees Celsius lower than the previous high set in July 2023. These temperatures led to heat waves that impacted millions of people in the United States. Read more...
Forest degradation releases 5 times more Amazon carbon than deforestation: Study Forest degradation — access roads, selective logging, fires, natural disturbances — is having a far greater impact on reducing carbon storage in the southern Brazilian Amazon than deforestation, according to a new study that has produced some of the most precise findings of changes in carbon stocks in a critically important region of the tropics. ?In real terms, forest degradation reduced carbon storage in the study area five times more than deforestation, a finding not currently reflected in Brazil’s carbon emissions accounting. Death toll for birds hitting buildings may be over 1 billion a year in US – report Less than half of stunned or injured birds survive a collision with a window, research has found, pushing up estimates that more than 1 billion birds may die each year from flying into buildings in the US. ?In a new study published on Wednesday in Plos One, researchers examined how many birds recovered in rehabilitative care after a building collision. Older estimates had assumed that most stunned birds would recover, but researchers found about 60% died, meaning the number killed by building strikes may be far higher than previously thought.
