BP reports second-quarter profit of £6.9bn - highest in 14 years
BP has reported a second-quarter profit of £6.9bn ($8.45bn) - its highest in 14 years - at a time when consumer fuel prices have been at record highs.
BP's underlying replacement cost profit, the company's definition of net earnings, was the strongest since 2008 and far exceeded analysts' expectations of £5.6bn ($6.8bn).
That compares to a £5.12bn ($6.25bn) profit in the first three months of 2022 and £2.29bn ($2.8bn) a year earlier.
Bernard Looney, CEO, BP:
"Today's results show that BP continues to perform while transforming. Our people have continued to work hard throughout the quarter helping to solve the energy trilemma - secure, affordable and lower carbon energy. We do this by providing the oil and gas the world needs today - while at the same time, investing to accelerate the energy transition."

Ukraine war: UN chief Guterres slams oil and gas firms' 'grotesque greed'
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for oil and gas companies to face special taxes. His comments come as surging energy prices sparked by the war in Ukraine push industry profits to new highs.
Mr Guterres said it was "immoral" for firms to be profiting from the crisis. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February has worsened a global shortage of oil and gas, disrupting access to oil and gas from Russia - a major supplier - and driving prices higher.
While households are grappling with higher energy bills, companies are reaping the benefits.
Together, four of the biggest energy firms - Exxon, Chevron, Shell and TotalEnergies - earned nearly $51bn in the most recent quarter - almost double what they made in the same period last year.
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General:
"This grotesque greed is punishing the poorest and most vulnerable people, while destroying our only common home. I urge all governments to tax these excessive profits, and use the funds to support the most vulnerable people through these difficult times."

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
What is ‘renewable gas’ and is it really just around the corner?
The industry is using the term “renewable gas” to describe both hydrogen made using renewable energy and biomethane that can be produced from organic waste such as human or animal sewage or food.
Both these forms of gas would be considered carbon-neutral – or close to carbon-neutral – because they’re not liberating carbon that was sequestered millions of years ago.
Theoretically, biomethane can be a straight swap for fossil gas without the need for people to change their cookers and other appliances.

The US grid is ready for 100% renewables, says DoE
The Biden administration is confident in the US's ability to demonstrate its power grid can run entirely on clean power, so it's giving the Department of Energy $26 million to stand up projects to do this.
The?announcement?from the DoE said money from President Joe Biden's 2021?infrastructure bill?will fund the endeavor, known as the?Solar and Wind Grid Services and Reliability Demonstration?(SWGSRD).
The demonstration initiative will see up to 10 solar, wind and energy storage projects deployed around the country at existing solar and wind facilities capable of generating at least 10 MW of power.?
Jennifer Granholm, US Secretary of Energy
"Americans do not have to choose between a clean grid and a reliable one as we move forward towards our goals of a net-zero economy by 2050"

NUCLEAR NEWS
Ukraine war: IAEA says Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant out of control
The U.N. nuclear chief warned that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine “is completely out of control” and issued an urgent plea to Russia and Ukraine to quickly allow experts to visit the sprawling complex to stabilize the situation and avoid a nuclear accident.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press that the situation is getting more perilous every day at the?Zaporizhzhia plant?in the southeastern city of Enerhodar, which Russian troops seized in early March, soon after their Feb. 24. invasion of Ukraine.
“Every principle of nuclear safety has been violated” at the plant, he said. “What is at stake is extremely serious and extremely grave and dangerous.”

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Prototype battery only needs seconds of sunlight to keep smart wearables charged
Thirty seconds of sunlight could boost the battery life of future smartwatches and other wearables by tens of minutes, thanks to a renewable and rechargeable battery prototype developed by the University of Surrey.
Surrey's Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) has demonstrated how its new photo-rechargeable system, which merges zinc-ion batteries with?perovskite solar cells, could allow wearables to spring back to life without the need to plug in.
