OIL AND GAS NEWS
The era of 'exponential' growth in US oil and gas sector is over, Halliburton chief says
The era of “exponential” growth in the?US oil and gas sector? "is over" as companies focus on boosting shareholder returns, according to Jeff Miller, chief executive of US oilfield services company Halliburton.
“We'll see growing investment, but quite frankly, nothing even close to what we saw from 2008 to 2014,” said Mr Miller, who was speaking at an Adipec panel on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.
A US shale resurgence, centered around the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, turned the country into the world’s largest crude producer in 2018.
Shale producers, quick to scale up drilling in response to?rising crude prices , have been reluctant to increase activity as they come under pressure from investors to boost profits and returns.
The US will remain the leading source of medium-term non-Opec liquids supply growth, providing 3.9 million barrels per day of oil, according to the?Opec World Oil Outlook .
Jeff Miller, CEO, Halliburton:
“Companies were spending at a rate of 120 per cent of their cash flow and that can’t go on indefinitely,”

BP to buy back more shares after profit doubles to $8bn
BP announced further share buybacks after third-quarter earnings more than doubled to $8bn, leaving the energy group on course for one of the most profitable years in its history.
Underlying profits for the three-month period were $8.2bn, up from $3.3bn a year earlier and far exceeding analysts’ average estimates of $6.1bn.
The group’s results cap a historic series of earnings for the world’s biggest oil and gas companies, buoyed by continued high energy prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
ExxonMobil reported a record quarterly profit of nearly $20bn last week, while Shell and Chevron posted the second-highest earnings in their histories at $9.5bn and $11.2bn respectively.
Bernard Looney, CEO, BP:
"The company is continuing to perform while transforming. We are providing the oil and gas the world needs today - while at the same time investing to accelerate the energy transition.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
Researchers Report Renewable Jet Fuel Breakthrough
Researchers at three institutions – the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Washington State University – report success in using lignin as a path toward a drop-in 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
Lignin is an underutilized natural resource that could be just what the airline industry needs to curb carbon emissions. It makes up the rigid parts of the cell walls of plants. Other parts of plants are used for biofuels, but lignin has been largely overlooked because of the difficulties in breaking it down chemically and converting it into useful products.
The newly published research demonstrated a process the researchers developed to remove the oxygen from lignin, such that the resulting hydrocarbons could be used as a jet fuel blendstock. The research, “Continuous Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin to Jet-Range Aromatic Hydrocarbons ,” appears in the journal?Joule.
The paper points to the need to use sustainable sources for jet fuel as the airline industry has pledged to dramatically reduce carbon emissions. Airlines consumed 106 billion gallons of jet fuel globally during 2019, and that number is expected to more than double by 2050. Accomplishing the industry’s goal of achieving net carbon neutrality during that same period will require a massive deployment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with high blend limits with conventional fuel.

Energy cost curbs are impeding Europe’s renewables rollout, Vestas warns
Attempts by the EU to curb high energy prices are leading to a slowdown in the adoption of renewable energy just as the region tries to ramp it up, the chief executive of one of the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturers warned.
“Every indication is that the EU and governments have spent more time in finding taxation methods or trying to limit energy prices, which has actually slowed the process and project accruals,” Henrik Andersen, chief executive of Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, told the Financial Times.
“Now there is an uncertainty of what you can expect to achieve on your electricity pricing. That is actually damaging the speed of renewables being brought on.
“It is not enough to talk about ambitions for increasing renewables,” he added. “The energy crisis is only solved by having real tangible actions, which means you need to speed up your permitting and get more prime energy sources in your grid and in your supply to the consumer.”

NUCLEAR NEWS
[UPDATE] Government backs Sizewell C after reports nuclear power plant could be scrapped
The government says it still supports the Sizewell C nuclear power plant and is hoping to get a deal over the line to fully fund the project as soon as possible.
Funding towards the Suffolk plant totalling £700m?was signed off by Boris Johnson ?at the start of September in one of his last acts as prime minister.
But the site's future was cast into doubt overnight after reports claimed it was being reviewed?ahead of the chancellor's autumn statement ?in just under two weeks - with Treasury sources telling Sky News "all options are on the table" to fill the fiscal black hole in government finances.
Now, Rishi Sunak's official spokesperson says the reports are "not accurate" and "our position remains the same", adding negotiations are "ongoing and constructive".
The £20bn Sizewell C project aims to generate enough low-carbon electricity to supply six million homes and help protect the UK from energy market volatility.
The plant is a joint endeavour with French energy giant EDF and is expected to take a decade to build.

Britishvolt: Battery start-up boss determined to see gigafactory built
The chairman of UK battery company Britishvolt says he is determined to see through the construction of its factory, despite concerns over funding.
The firm wants to build a vast plant producing batteries for electric vehicles but work has been delayed.
Peter Rolton said he did not want to "sell the site" in Northumberland or "give away the company".
On Monday, there were fears the start-up could collapse after the government rejected a £30m advance in funding.
The government had championed the so-called gigafactory in Blyth, and the 3,000 jobs expected to accompany it, to the point where it had committed £100m in total to Britishvolt.
But it refused to allow any funding to be?draw down early .
Teetering on the brink of administration, it emerged on Tuesday that Britishvolt had secured a cash injection from an existing investor giving it a five-week breathing space.
Three hundred existing staff at the company have also taken a pay cut.
Peter Rolton, Chairman, BritishVolt
"It would be entirely wrong to talk about a set number of weeks like it's some doomsday clock ticking down. Let's just say we've got a reasonable runway of funding in place with our supporters and we're working absolutely tirelessly to turn this around and get more funding in."
