Penang Establishes Chip Design Academy to Enhance Digital Sector
Penang has launched the Penang Chip Design Academy to strengthen its integrated circuit (IC) design and digital sectors. This initiative aligns with the state's forthcoming STEM Talent Blueprint, scheduled for launch in June. The academy aims to provide comprehensive design development, focusing on upskilling and reskilling through academic training and hands-on experience. It will be managed by the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) in collaboration with InvestPenang, industry players, and academia. The academy supports Penang’s IC Design and Digital Park, positioning the state as a prime investment destination for design and digital businesses. Penang hosts 18 of Malaysia’s 20 semiconductor IC design companies.
Promoting Digital Literacy in Schools to Foster Responsible Social Media Use
Early education on digital literacy, focusing on conduct and ethics, should be introduced at the school level to create responsible social media users, according to Dr Rani Ann Balaraman of Universiti Sains Malaysia. With the pervasive use of social media by children, it is crucial to teach them ethical usage. Dr Rani Ann also suggests that the government implement programmes for influencers and citizen journalists to ensure ethical content creation. The recent hefty fine imposed on a man for an offensive comment about a military accident underscores the government's commitment to curbing unethical social media practices.
Malaysia and UK Strengthen Ties to Boost Digital Economy
Malaysia values its strategic partnership with the UK, particularly in digital initiatives, to advance the digital economy in both nations. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted that this collaboration offers significant opportunities as the UK prepares to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership by the end of 2024. The upcoming Joint Economic and Trade Committee meeting and London Tech Week 2024 aim to create new digital business opportunities. The ongoing partnership between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce is pivotal in fostering bilateral trade relationships and advancing digitalisation efforts.

Japan to Train 100,000 Digital Professionals in Collaboration with ASEAN
Japan plans to collaborate with ASEAN to train 100,000 highly skilled digital professionals in artificial intelligence and semiconductors over the next five years, as announced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Srettha also noted Thailand's efforts to enhance its investment ecosystem and digital infrastructure, aiming to boost competitiveness and promote a sustainable, digital-based economy.
