Weekly Design Links – 2/11/25

Theres a lot of bad things happening in the world, in the US, and in cities nearby. I try to celebrate the good things: beauty, innovation, and joy of craft in these weekly link collections. It’s hard to ignore the chaos outside. We all compartmentalize things to survive–it’s a survival tactic, however flawed. The link show goes on, but when the kleptocrats run the show, the creative party will end. There will be no space for fun, art, or pretty links.

Typography

Joyse??Typeface : A sans-serif display font that blends retro style with a distinctly modern touch. Perfect for bold logos, eye-catching posters, magazine covers, and any visual identity that aims to be unique and impactful.

Web Design/UX/UI

Lessons from 5 years of UI architecture at GitHub : I believe it’s time for us to consider a Global Design System. And I’m not alone…

From pixels to personalization: The future of design :

Learn how to use technology to create experiences that are more anticipatory, personal, and genuinely human than ever before.

Tools

The timeline apps are here, and they’re awesome : One app, all your feeds, none of the nonsense of social media. It’s a better way to consume just about everything.

Branding

OpenAI has undergone its first ever rebrand, giving fresh life to ChatGPT interactions : A new typeface, word mark, symbol and palette underpin all the ways in which OpenAI’s technology interacts with the real world

Olo, Rize Alliance Properties Branding : This system needed to be flexible enough to cover the various stages of this years-long project: municipal proposals and pre-sales, construction and broader promotion, and finally, ownership and livability.

Design

2025 National Design Awards Winners : The National Design Awards honor innovation and impact and recognize the power of design to change the world. Established in 2000 as a project of the White House Millennium Council, the National Design Awards bring national recognition to the ways in which design enriches everyday life.

Art/Sculpture

Imposing Wild Animals Emerge from Layers of Cardboard in Scott Fife’s Sculptures : Armed with glue and screws, artist Scott Fife fashions large-scale creatures from a humble material in an exploration of the relationship between humans and our animal counterparts, particularly those we associate with myth and folklore.

Simon Laveuve’s 1/35-Scale Dwellings Hint at a Post-Apocalyptic Way of Life : Tiny tables, windows, paintings, and other objects fill multi-story rooms and mezzanines. In his most recent works, Laveuve continues his characteristic assemblage-like style, imagining a post-apocalyptic reality where basic belongings provide for a simple life.

Architecture

Office JDY designs minimalist Veja store in Williamsburg : The French footwear company’s Williamsburg space was outfitted to reflect its “sustainability-focused ethos and minimalist aesthetic”, according to Office JDY.

Flakstad School / LINK arkitektur : With its location in the rugged Lofoten landscape, the building is exposed to wind and all the forces of nature. The weather conditions were a key consideration in the design of the building to create a school with a strong focus on local climate adaptation.

John Freeborn great share! I hadn't seen the Tapestry app before but I've wondered about a similar concept. Good stuff.
