Weekly Design Links – 1/28/25

Time flies. Days turn into weeks, into months, into years, and it’s easy to lose track of it all. I’ve been at this design game for a long time now. From my production designer days to managing teams and everything in between–I still find it interesting (which is good). That’s not to say each job or project has been easy, that’s far from true. I’ve had my share of horrible bosses, projects that never saw the light of day, and office politics. This resilience I owe to skateboarding, which taught me how to fall, get up, and try again, no matter the pain. Pain is an amazing teacher–good and bad. You learn what to avoid very quickly. Without the good (rolling away from a difficult trick) or winning a big project, all that suffering wouldn’t be worth it? That’s not for me to say, it’s up to you to decide.

Design History

Nokia Design Archive : A graphic and interactive platform that allows you to explore behind-the-scenes design processes at Nokia

Industrial Design

SF-SO folds steel sheets to create “paper-like” shelving system : Despite its lightweight look, the folding technique used to construct the storage unit enables it to support over 100 kilograms of weight on its shelves without requiring additional reinforcement.

The DSKY Moonwatch Is Apollo Instruments’ Ode to Space Travel : A love letter to space travel that it’s actually a miniaturized recreation of the Apollo Guidance Computer, or AGC, which played an important role in every Apollo launch that NASA conducted.

Architecture

Studio Wok converts abandoned electrical cabin into minimalist artist residency : Architecture office Studio Wok has transformed a disused technical building at QuadroDesign’s headquarters in northern Italy into an artist residency, with living and sleeping areas accommodated in its unusually shaped roof.

nendo weaves six cottages together with ‘hand-holding’ roofs in japanese forest house : Each of the six cottages is slightly angled in a different direction; their black roofs contrast against the light-colored wooden base. These varying-height roofs, described as ‘holding hands,’ metaphorically unify the structures under a single conceptual canopy, offering intimacy and cohesion.

Typography

Varese : Varese is a geometric and modular typeface inspired by early 1900s Art Deco posters.

Art

Ai Weiwei’s New Toy Brick Masterpieces Re-Mix Art History : World-famous artist, activist, and provocateur Ai Weiwei is currently exhibiting stunning new work at two different galleries in New York that reproduce famous paintings and news images on a massive scale – all composed from hundreds of thousands of LEGO and WOMA bricks.

Joseph Ford: knitted camouflage : The best summary of what I do is ‘storytelling with a side order of off-beat creativity and an occasional sprinkling of optical illusions’

Motion Design

Brands in Motion : an independent resource, showcasing the very best motion design in branding

Design Thoughts

For The Love of God, Make Your Own Website : The internet sucks now–but it doesn’t have to

Beautiful, boring, and without soul : What could be more important in life than how you make people feel?
