Weekly Crypto Roundup (16-22 November 2024)

If you’ve been living under a rock this past week, we’ve got you covered with the biggest stories in crypto recently:?

  • Bitcoin is close to $100,000: It seems like no one can stop the Bitcoin ‘freight train’ as it’s now close to the elusive $100,000 mark (currently worth $98,745 or R1.78 million)
  • New upcoming rule for South African private wallet holders: A non-custodial crypto wallet is a wallet not linked to an exchange (usually in USB form). However, things will change for these holders from 30 April 2025.?

From this point, private wallet owners who transfer their coins to local exchanges to trade them back to fiat and other currencies will have to provide more information about each transaction. This is according to the Financial Intelligence Centre’s Directive 9.

  • South Africans can now buy property using crypto-currency: Thanks to a solution by Broll Auctions and Sales, Schindlers Attorneys and Schindlers Digital Assets, you can now purchase real estate with crypto.
  • Infamous ‘Cryptoqueen’ scammer is apparently in South Africa: 'Cryptoqueen,' (Ruja Ignatova) who scammed investors out of more than R74.4 billion in a fraud scheme, is apparently hiding in one of South Africa's most exclusive neighbourhoods. A $5 million reward (or R90.19 million) is on offer for anyone who can track the ‘world’s most wanted woman.’

Well, there you have it, a short-and-sweet mixture of global and local developments in the crypto world.
