The Weekly Childhood Trauma Newsletter: The Impact of Children's Mental Health on Your Bottom Line

A new Forbes article says employees are ready for workplace interventions that address child well-being , and I'm here for it. ?

I’ve been thinking about how the children’s mental health crisis is affecting working parents for about two years.?

Working parents make up approximately 81% of the U.S. workforce, and according to the research, their primary concern right now is their children’s mental health.?

When parents or other caregivers have a child who experiences trauma and/or struggles with a mental health problem, it is all-consuming and can begin to affect their ability to show up and do their job effectively.?

How Children's Mental Health is Impacting Employees

  • Anxiety about their child's well-being can make it difficult to focus on responsibilities at work.
  • Employees may need additional time off for mental health appointments for their children.
  • They might begin to struggle with their own mental health problems because of the stress and worry about their children, which could lead to job loss.
  • Staff may have trouble sleeping at night because of stress, which makes them tired and less productive at work the next day.
  • Employees may turn to substances to cope with their anxiety/depression, which impacts their ability to meet expectations at work.

According to research by Blue Cross Blue Shield, concerns about our children are brought to work with us every day, and they impact the success of your organization and the tension within your teams.

Are leaders in your organization doing anything to support the emotional well-being of your children??

Would you benefit from guidance and support at work for your children’s mental health??I'm picturing workshops and speaking events for working parents on trauma-informed parenting, and building emotional resiliency in children.

I am curious if corporate America will see the connection here and how it could improve their workplace culture and their bottom line (because we all know that's what really matters.)?

Quote of the Week

"When a child’s core belief is “I am bad,” they will behave in ways that prove their belief right because they can’t bear being wrong about one more thing."

All on board with this!! We need to ensure we have options! With recent news about mental health organizations collecting and selling/sharing data we are going to need to be hard nosed about privacy and security. Tying our medical care to our businesses, our careers, employers is bad enough, risking our children's data to this model is another. I agree some of our kids need help from medical professionals but let's make sure their data is secure and private before we start sharing it. Time limits for data retention, zero tolerance for any 3rd party access, ability for parents of kids under 18 to have all data deleted upon request and kids 18 or older to take that power. PHI should be understood to belong to the person it is about. It does not belong to the doctors or therapists or insurance companies etc. Transparency. Every person whose data is borrowed should know exactly what can be done with that data and who might be allowed to see it under what circumstances. I'd want to know my data was encrypted and access was limited to my Dr. and a very short and agreed upon list of people. Let's make sure as we move to help our children and ourselves that we don't actually exacerbate anxieties with worries about privacy and security!

School avoidance due to mental health needs can add another layer of stress for parents. Workplace resources and interventions that help support parents is important.
