Weekly CASual #23: what about the copyright?

Issue #023 Every week, we send you the best of our new free content in a wrap-up called the Weekly CASual. Enjoy! Forward to a friend or get your own by subscribing here.

Hey friends,

Happy Friday!

How's your week?

Can't believe July 1st is tomorrow. Anyone else feel like the summer is flying by?? ??

Let's jump into today's content!

It's good, promise. (I wouldn't send it to you if it wasn't. Seriously, I probably take way too long on this thing. ?? Just for you.)

Do I get to keep the copyright of AI-generated content? ??

Did you know there is an actual ruling from the US Copyright Office on AI and content?

You can read it here:

In essence, it says that the copyright is owned by the owner of the AI system.

Whoa!

This should put a serious thinking pause on AI content and our publishing goals.

For all content creators, publishers, and marketers using AI.

Because this begs more questions.

If you ask ChatGPT about the copyright of what it creates, it has a very confusing, roundabout answer, basically stating it doesn't know and you'd better ask in court.

I don't know about you, but court is not where I want to find that out. ??

Here's the kicker about the US Copyright ruling, though.

If someone creates their own proprietary AI out of existing APIs (hello, Content at Scale! that's us – a proprietary mix of 3 NLPs, a semantic algorithm crawler, upcoming topic suggestion engine, and more - the new version of our app coming this fall is INSANE ??)

...Then that creator owns that proprietary stack.

And as the US Copyright Office says, whoever owns it can pass the copyright down to you!

Good news for Content at Scale users.

Our founder, Justin McGill , doesn't have VC funding or a bunch of profit-hungry board members messing things up around here ?? .

And we pass the copyright down to every user. (Haven't read the founding story yet? catch it here.)

One of the reasons I went from anti-AI to pro was this exact fact. ?? I found a tool (Content at Scale) that had proprietary tech, that could actually pass down the copyright to its users.

I'd been pretty reluctant to use ChatGPT-written content on my website, books, etc. I didn't like the gray matter of the copyright. This held me back from adapting to AI for about six months. ?

In the end, I'd much rather trust an entrepreneur working hard to build something that solves a real problem, than a big board + AI entity originally set up for non-profit, and now actually changing their tune on that (don't get me started on OpenAI's history – just listen to Elon Musk talk about it).

Anyway, those are rants for another day. ??

Hopefully this helped.

TL;DR – think about who owns the copyright behind the AI. Proceed with caution.

For more, check out this new post on the CaS blog. (Was this written with AI? And humanly edited? You bet. ?? )

P.S. Someone asked me: What if ChatGPT stops working?

Legit question.

1) Well, every AI app would be in trouble. 2) I'm convinced the team at Content at Scale would figure out how to get around that. It's unreal how many big decisions we make in a week.

New features ??

Did you hear? Our AI Detector now detects images!

Go try it out now. →

Select Image Detector at the top, and upload or insert an image URL to instantly check for AI.

Also yes that is Josh, our COO, in the GIF below as Yoda on supplements. If you have the chance to ever chat with the man, please thank him for being a patient soul with my Midjourney antics. ??

New case studies ??

Not one, not two, but THREE today!

I had the honor of interviewing Paul Gallovich , founder of aiocontentent.com. Listen in as he reveals how he leverages AI not just for his own content, but to scale his entire business to new heights.

Paul spills the beans on his brilliant strategies, including cherry-picking clients, offering packaged services, and using powerful tools like Content at Scale, Semrush, and Ahrefs to grow his business. ??

Next up is Heidi Weinberg , an exceptional user of Content at Scale. Known as Sew Heidi, she operates successfulfashiodesigner.com, and wholeheartedly embraces our AIO approach.

By hiring and training writers to optimize the AI engine, Heidi preserves her unique touch while harnessing the power of Content at Scale. Listen to her share the story behind how she's using Content at Scale. ??

Finally, in this Content at Scale User Spotlight video, I'm talking to Alex Johnson , SEO agency owner in Dubai, who managed to remove 4-5 extra steps and extra hiring work out of his SEO agency all thanks to his adaptation to AIO (Artificial Intelligence Optimization) and Content at Scale.

Gone are the days of tedious outlines and time-consuming tasks, as Alex reveals his secrets to maximizing efficiency and skyrocketing profit margins.

Join me in Austin, Texas ??

It's over 100 degrees now every afternoon... that's Texas in June and July.

If you're here in the blistering heat with me ?? , I'd love to invite you to join me for an in-person live session where I'll cover in a new 45-minute talk how AI Is the Future of Content, at the Capital Factory (the birthplace of Jasper, where their first office began!).

It's happening in this Meetup for marketers hosted by Fernando Labastida at Capital Factory.

I'm speaking there July 5, Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m. Join me!

Going to TBEX & MAICON this July ??

We're sponsoring two AMAZING events this summer (with more to come this fall!).

First up is TBEX North America, the go-to event for travel bloggers. I was invited as the keynote speaker – totally honored Rick thought of me!! It's July 17 - 20, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Check it out here! Come join me for an amazing session.

Then, we'll be at MAICON, Marketing Intelligence Conference by Marketing AI Institute , sponsoring their event July 26 - 28 in Cleveland, Ohio. Check out our feature on MAICON's site here: Content at Scale Spotlight.

Come say hi if you're at either events, too!

Feeling AI curious? ??

Jeff Joyce , Director of AI here at Content at Scale, continues to develop a great newsletter: AI Curious. ( Sign up! )

He covered the news of Midjourney version 5.2 that just released this week. The star of the show is Midjourney's new feature, wonderfully named "Zoom Out." This feature practically enables any of us to take any picture and—wait for it—"zoom out" to see what's beyond the captured frame. Look at this incredible AI-generated image of a human eye from the new version of Midjourney:

This is a HUGE deal. Why would you create content that you don’t have the rights to?

It is interesting that the stuff that’s used (copied?) by AI to generate content can then be owned by the AI tool. It’s an interesting and difficult to navigate legal paradigm.

Julia McCoy this caused me to go back and find out the result of the "chimpanzee selfie" from a few years ago. It too was a non-human making the art and as such there is no copyright. Now the photographer that'd been selling the images did eventually agree to donate 25% to a charity. In theory though anyone should be able to sell them. Fascinating problem for future copyright searches since AI has also been known to fib. Thanks for posting!
