A weekend for winners …….
Depending on who and what you like, it was a weekend of celebration for many on the sports scene, wasn’t it?
Of course, not if you are following the Carolina Panthers, who suffered yet another humiliating loss in their 40-7 drubbing by Washington as they continue to languish in the NFL’s cellar.
But if, say, you root for the Kansas City Chiefs, you likely popped a cork yesterday as they knocked off former Super Bowl rival San Francisco 28-18 and are now the only undefeated team left in the NFL as they work their way toward another possibly inevitable third straight league crown.
And Russell Wilson did a pretty good job showing he's getting comfortable in a Steelers uniform, piloting Pittsburgh to a 37-15 win over the Jets.
If baseball’s your thing, you’re either delighted or disappointed that this coming weekend’s World Series launch will feature “Hollywood versus Broadway” as the L.A. Dodgers square off with the New York Yankees in this year’s October clash.
The Dodgers finished polishing off the Mets and the Yankees clobbered Cleveland to reach the championship games in what many hoped would be a “subway series” but now will be a coast-to-coast conflict.
As for the collegiate gridiron over the past few days, Georgia Bulldog faithful are jumping for joy with their team’s win over top-ranked Texas before a packed house at the Longhorns’ Darrel K. Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin.

If there ever was a time when Yogi Berra’s immortal observation played out, this past weekend definitely proved “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over” on many sports fronts.
Like, for instance, the Women’s National Basketball Association, as a persistent New York Liberty pulled off a major coup over rival Minnesota Lynx in an overtime 67-62 win to capture their first league crown in what has been a record-setting year for the WNBA.
And local PGA pro J.T. Poston, a good ol’ Hickory boy, picked up his third pro golf win by edging Doug Ghim by a stroke to hoist the Shriners Children’s Open trophy at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The Charlotte Football Club notched another win, downing DC United 3-0 on Saturday to cement a berth in the MLS Cup playoffs first round, hosting Orlando City on Nov. 1 at Bank of America Stadium.
And then there was so much more college football that it’s sometimes hard to keep up.
Unless you’re an NC State fan celebrating the Wolfpack’s 24-23 west coast win over Califormia or are doing a double-take on Davidson’s victory over Stetson in what seemed to be a basketball score, 70-48.
And Johnson C. Smith’s Golden Bulls kept their undefeated streak going as they beat Shaw in the weekend’s homecoming game.
So anyway, in these times of almost-ridiculously nasty political ads and daily bad news headlines, the sports world gave us an exciting, fun escape for a little while.
Y’all have a good week, you hear?
