The Weekend Is Where Your Future Is Built

The Weekend Is Where Your Future Is Built

Small steps are what build the life you want.

“Use your weekends not to escape the life you have, but to slowly build the life you truly want — 15 minutes at a time.” — Teronie J. Donaldson

We often see the weekend as a reprieve from the grind — a way to escape from the life we’re not particularly fond of. But what if, instead of using those precious two days to simply escape, we used them to build the life we truly desire?

I remember a time when I was stuck in a job I dreaded. The weekend was my only solace, a brief escape from the seemingly endless cycle of tasks I found no joy in.

I’d do anything to numb the frustration, be it binge-watching shows, going out aimlessly, or just sleeping away the hours. But Monday always came, and I’d find myself right back in the same spot, counting down the days to the next escape.

It was a vicious cycle that got me nowhere.

That’s when I realized I had to make a change. I didn’t have to make a huge leap; I just needed to take small, consistent steps. I began to use my weekends differently. Instead of numbing my pain, I spent 15 minutes each day working on a side project — something I was passionate about but had never had the time to pursue.

The trick was to start small—really small—just 15 minutes every weekend. I did it for 21 days until it became a habit. Then, I gradually increased my time to 30 minutes, 45, and so on.

Over a few months, I noticed a shift. Those tiny increments of time, consistently invested, slowly transitioned me from a life I wanted to escape to one filled with new possibilities and excitement.

The Power of Incremental Growth

This isn’t just my story. Many others have used this strategy to build something incredible during their free time.

Take, for example, Sarah Cooper, a former tech employee who used her evenings and weekends to create satirical content about the corporate world. She started by posting short sketches on social media, dedicating a small amount of time each week to her passion project.

Slowly, her content gained traction, and she eventually transitioned from a corporate employee to a full-time comedian and author. Her journey was not about quitting her job on a whim but about consistent, incremental effort over time.

Or consider the story of Nick Loper, who worked full-time while building a side hustle during his weekends.

Nick started Side Hustle Nation, a platform that offers advice and inspiration for those looking to build a business in their spare time. He dedicated small pockets of his weekends to creating blog content, networking, and experimenting with different business ideas.

Over time, these small efforts accumulated, allowing him to eventually leave his job and focus entirely on his business.

Start Small to Achieve Big

The key to transforming your weekends from a time of escape to empowerment is to start small.

Carve out just 15 minutes of your weekend to work on a passion project, a new skill, or a side hustle. It doesn’t sound like much, but that’s the point. It’s easy to find 15 minutes in a day. This micro-commitment lowers the barrier to getting started and makes the effort feel almost effortless.

As you continue, those 15 minutes will gradually feel more natural.

After a few weeks, increase it to 30 minutes, then 45. These small increments won’t feel like a massive drain on your time, but they’ll start to build momentum. You’ll find that these minor adjustments are actually a powerful way to transform your weekends into the foundation for the future you want.

The Slow Transformation is Sustainable

Unlike rapid changes that often lead to burnout, slow, consistent progress builds sustainable habits. It turns a daunting dream into manageable steps, which, over time, will lead to significant growth.

Remember, quick transformations often don’t last. They require an immense amount of effort all at once and can quickly become overwhelming.

Slow transformations, on the other hand, feel effortless. When things feel easy, you’re more likely to stick with them. When you stick with them, they turn into action. And sustained action is what ultimately changes your future.

So, instead of spending the weekend trying to forget about the life you have, spend it building the life you want. Your future is built on what you do today, even if it’s just 15 minutes at a time.

I hope this helps you on your journey.

All the best.
