The BIG news was the first ever regulation around AI, predictably by the EU, called the EU AI Act. ??This is a landmark since it is the first real regulation brought out in AI; so far, countries have only been talking of it. It extends the GDPR risk framework, and puts the onus of obligations on the providers or developers of high risk systems irrespective of where these providers are located. As always, the EU has taken a safety-first, and some might argue an anti-innovation approach. However, there is consensus that AI needs regulation and guardrails and it will be interesting to see how large AI companies like OpenAI , 谷歌 , etc. as well as local innovators like Mistral react to the same, given that many of them were lobbying against it.
While the EU went full steam ahead, India backpedaled a bit, ‘clarifying’ and essentially pulling back its sudden bombastic announcement by the Minister of Electronics and IT that all large scale LLMs need to be verified or checked by the Government of India before they can be released to Indian users Read Here. This caused unusual concern amongst tech companies, since it seemed like a retrospective rather than prospective regulation. I had spoken about ?this, predicting that there will be a roll back. Well, the Advisory has been significantly diluted, and the sighs of relief from big tech companies and startups could be heard all around.

Moving away from regulation, the news of the week was the launch of Devin, the ‘world’s first AI software engineer’. Launched by Cognition , Devin is recognized as the world's first AI software engineer, capable of writing, debugging, and deploying code to create functional websites and products.. Devin is designed to plan and execute complex engineering tasks, continuously learn and improve over time, collaborate with users, and operate autonomously. The introduction of Devin marks a milestone in the development of artificial intelligence, showcasing its ability to perform intricate coding tasks and contribute to the creation of sophisticated digital solutions. Already starting being called Devil by some hyper-concerned software developers, this will be interesting to watch.
The space is certainly heating up….at warp speed.
